well, does it? what is the advantage to bumping up to home premium or business? I'm looking at getting a new notebook, and i don't want to spend any more money than I have to. thats why i want to know if its worth it to upgrade.

If you get Basic, you don't get Windows Aero. I recommend Premium, it's worth it. Premium also gets Windows Media Center, Basic doesn't.
That's not the only advantage, the link to comparing each version of Vista seems to be down.
This is the link, but it's down.

No, not if your needs, usage habits, and available equipment are appropriate for the scaled-down nature of Basic.

I posted that and said it was down already.
It just depends on how you plan to use your machine. If you don't care about looks and the pc is for productivity, get basic. If you are going to use it for entertainment and fun, premium or higher. -
Bah! i knew i should have installed the basic version!
Installing Vista premium and disabling 1/4 of the services is just silly -

I prefer this comparison over Microsoft's marketing stuff:

Basically, if you are ok without Aero or Media Center, or anything exclusive to the business versions of Vista, then Basic is fine. It'll run your programs just as well as the other versions.
Does Vista home basic totally suck?
