Here is the situation : XP home on a 8 GB SSD.

Guy claims that only 300 MB space is free..

"“No problem, I’ll move what I need to use to the SSD”, is what you might be thinking. The SSD is 8GB in size (actually, 6.69 GB in size). A default Windows XP install will use up most of that space. I only had enough space to install Firefox, video codecs and a couple more programs before I started getting “out of space” pop up dialog boxes starting to bug me. You have roughly 331MB of disk space to play around with on a default out-of-the-box setup, or up to 1.67GB if you disable hibernation and recycle bin storage."

And I thought XP only took around 1.5 GB space ?

I don't understand the question. Are you asking why it's taking up so much space? In that case, who knows. But not even Windows 7 take's up that much space, which is odd. Hmm, If anyone has a solution to this, I'd love to also hear it!

    Cheers.

How's about doing a file listing first, including hidden and system files, to see how much stuff you actually have on there. If this was an old XP installation that was cloned over to the SSD, then it would have taken with it stuff such as all of the old hotfix/update installation files with it (which the OS keeps compressed copies of for uninstallation purposes), and those alone can very quickly add up to a whole bunch of additional gigs of space taken - which is for the most part a silly waste of space since I seriously doubt if you're going to uninstall an anonymous hotfix that was first issued and installed three years ago.

Hibernation creates a file that is the same size as your RAM, so if you have 2 GB of RAm then the hibernation file will be 2 GB. System restore will take up space according to the setting you have in place. And the swap file will be large as well if you hav a lot of RAM.

My XP install is under a Gig, even with all the updates. But I also clean out oll the update download and uninstall files so it doesn't get bigger and bigger. I have system restore, hibernation, and virtual memory. The latter simply because I have enough memory to never need it. But even with a reasonable virtual memory it's easy to have an XP install under 2 GB.

    Try WinDirStats maybe? http://windirstat.info/

    To the OP:
Where did you find a 8GB SSD? That sounds like a CF card to me...

Maybe upgrade to a larger one?

My suggestion would be to create a custom build of XP using nlite. http://www.nliteos.com/

You can strip out all the drivers and non-essential services. You can get a minimal XP install down to like 300MB or so.

Windows XP typically takes 5GB of space, without drivers or programs.

I'm wondering, what can you do with an 8GB SSD anyways?
