    Program: qttask.exe
    Publisher: Apple Computer Inc.

This program stops my pc from running vista Aero so I am wondering if I can remove it.

You can also disable it this way:

Start -> Control Panel -> QuickTime -> Advanced

Then uncheck the box Install QuickTime icon in system tray.

qttask had a nasty habit of coming back on the start up menu nearly every time the program opened. Seems to behaving itself now

Quicktime on Windows is terrible. I hate how they bundle it with iTunes.

This is what I use, check out QT Lite, no junk or iTunes.

This is a stripped installation package of the actual QuickTime package, it's the same files from Apple.

Is there any way to get rid of quicktime and still keep iTunes? I hate that stupid program, it's useless.

This would be useful for me as well since I have to use iTunes for my iPod.

As I understand it any file of the format 'qt*.*' is either a trojan or a virus, depending on whether you 'volunteered' (i.e. chose to infect your system by installing iTunes or some other Apple product) or were forced to by attempting to watch a video with the .MOV extension. Either way, as you see, it is extremely persistent and difficult to rid yourself of. The BEST solution is to not use anything Apple, but since it's too late for that, Un-install all the poisonous programs and clean the registry. Then use WinAmp or some other program to mange your iPod, and QuickTime alternative for the rest of that Poison Apple stuff.

My HP notebook came with Apple QuickTime pre-installed. Of course I uninstalled and deleted all traces of it!

    personally,

I HATE itunes and really dislike quicktime. as far as needing something to work with my ipod, and to be able to run quick time files here are the two work arounds i use:

first off, i use quicktime alternative, its WAAAAAAAY smaller than the original quicktime and its files, it works flawlessly, and its open source.

    link to quicktime alternative:
    http://majorgeeks.com/QuickTime_Alternative_d5610.html

The second program i use replaces iTunes, which i hate so much its amazing. I LOVE songbird. its based on the mozilla firefox engine, and made by the folks who do firefox if i remember right. again open source, way smaller than itunes, works flawless and you can do a ton more things with it, better, than itunes. it also takes a lot less system resources to run each of these two programs. heres a link to songbird:

    hope this helps!!!!!

The original creator of QuickTime Alternative have stopped developing the project. Check out QT Lite, which is basically the same as QuickTime Alternative with continuous development.

Actually, Songbird uses more memory than iTunes on my machine... at least since I disabled all of iTunes' background processes. And CPU usage seems about the same as far as I can tell. However, Songbird does have the benefit of not running processes in the background when you don't have the app open.

And of all the major media players I tried, it was the only one I didn't really like any better than iTunes. It was like a copy of iTunes but with fewer features. My biggest complaint with both of them is that you can't (in any way that I can find) view your playlist alongside your library... you have to switch back and forth between them. Songbird did have the advantage of supporting skins though, or at least color themes... though I didn't find any skins that I like.

However, Songbird is open source and cross-platform, so I think it will grow... it's still young, that's all.

For my usage pattern, Windows Media Player 11 was the best all around, once I fiddled with some of the different library views. But Winamp, J River Media Jukebox, RealPlayer, and Teen Spirit are all good alternatives.
