Does anyone still play AOE and get this issue in vista/win 7?

I am trying to play the original age of empires but the only problem is that (unlike when I used to run it xp) the water has pixelated dashes in it, yellow, pink, etc. I have tried all the compatibility settings to no avail.

    My specs

    win 7 64 bit
    330m
    i5 2.53ghz
    4 gigs ram

    Yeah, happens to everyone.

Try closing explorer.exe before starting the game...

I've also read that something as stupid to open the resolution changer (in 7, that is, maybe Vista to) before launching game, would also fix it.

Ha, this is also the reason I stopped playing AOE II. On Vista the problem is easily fixable by installing DX9 and Alt-Tabbing out of the game if/when those weird colours pop up.

    I haven't found a solution for Windows 7 yet.

I just play local anymore. Online is a hassle since MSN gaming zone went away. If the water looking pink/yellow bothers you, try levels without water. It works for me.
