Does your Win 7 boot slower than Vista?

Took about 1:20 min for Win 7 to show the bluetooth icon (last in tray) and only 55 seconds for Vista to do the same. It's not a big deal but since the Win 7 is freshly installed, I thought it would take less time.

What has been your experience in boot-up time?

 

My vista 64 boots faster than my Windows 7 64 bit, by like 8 seconds.

Yes. Windows 7 ultimate on my netbook takes less than 20 seconds for everything to finish loading and becomes usable.

 

I think Win 7 is slower on my laptop, but no way to check since I upgraded.

 

Windows 7 is about as fast as XP is on my laptop.

 

Dual-booting Windows 7 and Vista, and my Windows 7 boots up faster since it doesn't have as many apps. and etc. on it yet.

 

I would like to see video of that.

7 is definitely faster than Vista for me, but you’re also not really doing an accurate comparison. Vista, and even more so 7, incorporates design changes to give you a USEABLE desktop as soon as possible after startup—and they do this, in part, by delaying the starting of various services until after the desktop is ready for use. So, if you really want to compare the two, you shouldn’t really wait for the Bluetooth icon—you should just wait long enough for your desktop to be readily responsive.

 

windows 7 is definitely slower than vista for me.. lol

 

my win7 64bit takes about 1min 20 to actually show the desktop. which is pretty slow i reckon. the longest point is when it says "starting windows" this takes probably 30-40 seconds if not more. once i log on, the desktop appears reasonably quickly.

 

I also like to see the 20sec booting video on the Netbook. SSD?

 

It's acer aspire one netbook with stock 160GB WD Scorpio Blue. After optimization, the HDD is at least twice as fast as the ssd.

 

Much faster than Vista, W7 is ready from power button to responsive desktop in 40 seconds.

Give it a few days and post back, W7 increased boot speed over several days and several restarts.

 

What optimization..?
I have a WD Black 320gband T9500 installed. It takes a bit over a minute, but 20sec..that's fast.

 

One thing that helps to speed up win7 and vista boots is to play with the services startups. There is a new-ish setting, automatic/delayed. I moved 7 or 8 'slow starting' services from auto to auto/delay and that took about 1/3 off my boot times.

I've also found that moving 'needed' services from auto to manual really doesn't help much and can cause all kinds of problems.

Moving unneeded services to disabled still provides benefits, but ONLY if you know exactly what you are doing.

1. Configure all unneeded services to delay start
2. Turn off all unneeded services
3. enable readyboost
4. Defrag MFT
5. Defrag and optimize HDD so all your drivers and frequently used files are placed on the outer edge of the disk
6. Organize your essential drivers..etc used during boot so OS can sequential read the hdd during startup
7. Disable all unused hardware through device manager

That's pretty much all I did and I was able to reduce my startup time from 40 seconds to 20 seconds.

 

Well, I guess if you do that, you can reduce the boot up time significantly. But it's not a sensible thing to do for most people.

 

Also.. netbook tends to boot faster than desktop computers or laptop. For some strange reason, the simpler the hardware, the faster Windows boots.

 

Ya I've basically tweaked my laptop to boot fast and the quickest I can get is 30 seconds.

 

How did you "tweak" your laptop? What's the specs of your laptop? HDD maximum sequential read? HDD seek time? Processor speed? Ram?..etc

The breakdown of boot time:
1) Bios POST: 3 seconds
2) Boot screen: 3 seconds
3) Blank screen: 5 seconds
4) Login screen and entering password: 5 seconds
5) Waiting for everything to load: 2-5 seconds

Result ~20 seconds

I "tweaked" it by disabling unneeded services, disabled unused hardware, defrag bootfiles, clean registry, occasionally compact it, delete unneeded startup apps, turn off windows features i dont use, etc etc. Did a lot more that I don't remember off the top of my head.

EDIT: made that video awile ago when some other member asked me for a video. its actually probably slower than that now, since i don't maintain my pc as well anymore.

 

Wow... your laptop spends a long time in the bootscreen. Otherwise, other parts of bootime is similar to mine.

Yeah, that is pretty quick. I haven't put Windows 7 on my laptop, only my desktop, and Win7 claims faster start up. Did you clean install windows 7 on there or upgrade?

 

I clean installed. I never upgrade anything. I get almost the same startup time in Windows 7 as XP.

 

Oh, well that's probably why it is so fast also. Fairly new and clean with not as many apps and etc. My laptop boot had a lot of things starting, probably would of been quicker if I disabled all start up apps.

-full adobe CS3 master collection
-media players
-100GB of movies/music/photos
-live mesh
BTW.. the netbook's hdd is 160GB.

Since I have an SSD I figured I wouldn't see any difference in boot up times.

But Windows 7 x64 is faster than my old Vista x64 install. Been trying to figure out what exactly changed in the boot up. The Vista x64 install was a fresh install so I don't think that was the reason.

 

Because Windows 7 was made to boot up faster than Vista. It's something MSFT did on their end, not due to your settings/hardware/etc.

 

It starts a bit faster than Vista, this is with my programs installed and everything.

 

About the same, or slower than Vista. But my Vista install was a little optimized, which is all Win 7 is anyway.

 

Windows 7 is a little more than just Vista "optimized."

 

In rough terms, I can go from an open desktop through a shutdown/reboot and sign-in to a functioning desktop in about 60 seconds.

This is with all files/programs closed and no network (802.11) operating.

It takes my machine about 10 seconds to sleep/hibernate and another 10 seconds to wake up.

 

For me Windows 7 64-bit boots slower than Vista Home Premium 32-bit with 2 GB RAM.

 

W7 Boots faster than Vista. I didnt time it, but i realize it.

my win7 x64 boots way faster than vista x32, by about 15 seconds. total time is about 35 seconds maybe if you dont include the time it takes me to type in my password.

Hmm ive managed to get my vista 32bit boot down to 20 seconds and 3 second loging.

W7 still sat at 35 seconds and 3 seconds login

I want w7 to overtake

 

i did a fresh install of both on my machine and windows 7 is quite a lot faster just out of the box on my laptop
