I'm in the process of building a new desktop computer, and need some help deciding which OS to use. I currently have a full version of Vista Ultimate that was a gift to me early last year, and that has never been installed because I've been happy (so far) with XP Professional on my old desktop machine. Should I just use the Vista, or would it be smarter to take advantage of the 1/2 off upgrade special that's going on now, and spend the $100 and get the Windows 7 Professional upgrade version for my new build?

Go Windows 7. Honestly, it is so much better than Vista. It's money well spent. I am using Windows 7 RC 1 and it is so much more stable and faster than Vista.
I am using 64 bit. -
I say install Vista first, then take advantage of the promotion price to upgrade to Windows 7. You can even do a full clean install using the upgrade package, so long as you activated Vista first.

Any of u getting problems with windows 7. My internet suddenly becomes a turtle since in install my windows 7 into my system.

Nope. Have you tried updating drivers - wireless or NIC?
cheers ... -
I think you should go on with Vista first. Even after that you have chance to get the benefit of promotional price to upgrade to Win 7.

I do agree though that windows 7 is faster and much more refined than Vista. While Vista works very well for me, the preorder price for W7 upgrade can't be denied. -
Thanks for the input. I'm convinced enough to spend the $100 before the 11th and order the Windows 7 Professional upgrade. And as soon as a decent HP coupon comes out, I'll be ordering a DV4T with Vista Ultimate 64 bit and get the free upgrade for that also.

If you're building now, definitely go Vista 64. Once Win 7 goes official, definitely upgrade.

IMHO, if your Vista is completely unused and a full or upgrade version (not OEM), you can always use Windows 7 RC until Windows 7 comes out. It is stable and usable.
Then you can use your Vista for another machine or sell it (or gift) to someone else. This software is like gold because of all the restrictions once it's used, and I don't believe you can resell it once it's been used. So in other words, possibly find a buyer for Vista and put the money towards Windows 7 full or OEM version. It may end up being cheaper that way, and you'll be used to Windows 7 by the time you have to reformat and reinstall with official released version.
Only promotional upgrades I've seen are for Home Premium and Professional not Ultimate.
Doing new build - Vista 64 or Windows 7??
