I just installed Doom 3 and it took me NO LIE, almost 5 hours to complete installation!!!!!!!!

Does anybody in here have any idea why? Is there something wrong with my dvd drive? Is 8x suppose to be that slow?

I guess" software installation glitch "might be an oversimplification , but thats what it sounds like. Sometimes a program will hang up when it copies files, then removes them, and keeps doing it over and over instead of once. Thru the course of normal use you should be able to see if there is anything obviously wrong with the dvdrw. There also could be some dirt or a sctratch on the disk.

    5 hours,wow!
have you tried using daemon tools which uses an emulation drive.
it uses a ghost drive instead of running from the disc.
try the lite version, its free clikety click

was it on stealth mode at the time of installation? because when i install something while on stealth mode, the speed is really slow.

I don't like Daemon Tools or anything like that... having all those idle drives in "My Computer" all the time bothers me...

I do however use it for servers and things that I don't have physical access to... since I can't physically swap the CDs/DVDs in the machine, DT works great!

Stealth mode should not cause it but sometimes the media is the problem. I am not talking about the scratches but the way data is written on media. I had similar problem with one of my windows install disk and it took more than an hour just to bring the Windows Setup screen.

Have you heard too much sound coming from your drive? Like optical lens trying to adjust location too often?

Also, DMA maybe unchecked. Don't ask me why, but if DMA (Dynamic Mode Access i think) is not enabled, the drive will act like a 2x vs a 48x or whatever speed you have. You can check it through the device manager.

Did you check the obvious like a bad CD disc? ;)

Check your event log and see if you have CD Rom error checks.
