Hi...
I was wondering if you folks can help me out with suggestions for a software (preferably free), which I can use to make diagrams for a project that I am working on. To give you an idea of the kind of diagrams I am talking about, I am attaching a handmade sketch of one sample. It is somewhat of an urgent request.
Thanks in advance...
Cheers!

have a look at the various packages that are part of the Libre Graphics group

If you want a nice cad package, try our BrlCad

SketchUp is for 3D modeling, which I don't think is what the OP really wants. Last time I used SketchUp, it didn't have any kind of drawing/drafting feature. Has this been added?

I would like to introduce you some awesome drawing softwares.
List:
OpenCanvas(cheap)
Corel Painter XI(moderate)
Adobe Photoshop CS1, CS2, CS3, CS4(expensive)
Basically, I use Adobe Photoshop CS3 to do some drawing and painting.
See my works using Adobe Photoshop CS3 here, http://silver-fate.deviantart.com/
My works ain't good but you can have a look on how and what Adobe Photoshop can do. -
Inkscape might be appropriate.
It's free.

Either way, the OP looks like he's trying to create some 3D surfaces/shapes with textures. I think you can upload your own textures in SketchUp. -

I downloaded Google Sketchup and played around with it for a while. While I can do some of the outlines, there are things like waves, and shading, which I can't do - or more accurately, don't know how to do. Anyways, there are the other suggestions that some of you posted, which I am in the process of looking into.
Thanks -
