    Go here:

    http://www.vistahd.org/component/option,com_frontpage/Itemid,1/

Follow the link to deskscapes and download the free plugin.

Then choose and use any of the 57 dreamscenes here, many of which are HD. I like this the best and there is no site watermark in the final free download:

    <object width='425' height='355'><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/F__w5tPPwgM&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/F__w5tPPwgM&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width='425' height='355'></embed></object>

Are DreamScenes practical? i mean do u run them while working or gaming?

aren't they like Vista Sidebar? (hardly used)

You are right. you run it for a few days, then start thinking the 40% CPU usage it consumes is a lot and you turn it off. But it's nice to have to turn on once in a while ;)

As for some of the .dreams that you want to try

You can just change the filename to .wmv or .mpg
(This may not work with every dream but I know some that work)

I think .dream are not intercompatible with dreamscene, neither is there a converter.

As far as I can figure out you are right MaXimus. I have tried switching the format of a few of these and I cannot get them to work with Dreamscene. However the Microsoft link that Polsta threw up will work. They are .exe files so you will have to first download them then unzip and drop them into Windows>web>Dreamscene. Some of those are really nice just due to the fact that you can get them in 1080p if you don't mind the size of the files.

As for this being useless, I am the same as MaXimus. Even though I won't use it all the time, it's just a cool feature to have, and really cool to show off to computer friends. Even though it does up my computer usage a bit I haven't noticed any slow down in my system, however I have shut it off when doing gaming, but for casual browsing/surfing it hasn't caused any noticable change in my speed.

Why use it with VLC when you can make it run on dreamscene itself???
Just ask maximus to send you the instructions

Just like the other two I use it to liven things up, when browsing or normal applications that do not require the CPU. It is nice to have.

I also put installed dreamscene on my sisters laptop(she got jealous when she saw my desktop moving)

Hmm weird, I only use that site to get wallpapers and my Nod32 doesn't complain  ? It must be a false positive. I'm sure IL is not hosting trojans

Thanks alot. Appreciated. I am working on putting together some looped videos.

Are any of the interfacelift.com wallpapers in a video format or are they just stills? It doesn't matter, since there are some extremely nice backgrounds on there that I have already saved. I just thought maybe I was missing some moving backgrounds since the site was posted under the Dreamscene thread.

yes any .wmv can be played

The only thing special with .dream is that it has author information and such

I don't think that will be an issue, the CPU usage should gone down when the desktop is not being displayed. Like when you have firefox maximized, it does not use any CPU power, simply because the video is not playing.

Well, thats true but i still like it to move around even at maximized state.

I just use the normal window and enlarge it so the dream will not be stopped.

How do you get the .dream files to work? Do you need to buy an additional program?

How come? If the screen is totally covered, might as well have the resources return, so it can be put to better use.

To get the .dream files to work you need deskscapes

deskscapes are for Vista Ulitmate only, The NEW versiion will allow other Vistas(premium, business) to run .dream files.

Although you can try to change the filename to either .wmv and .mpeg to see if it can run(This method sometimes work)

Well, so the computer will not have any trouble playing it again. Sometimes it stutters when starting

But I like it the most when the taskbar at the button changes color because of the video

Also when I use the windows+Tab buttons you can still see the dreamscene moving along the smaller sized window.

(Do this when you are your desktop, then go to window+Tab mode)

So to completely answer my own question, you DO need an additional program for the .dream files, you need to go to www.stardock.com and get the DeskScapes previously mentioned. It is free, although some of the .dreams they offer are priced.

Also, here are some other files that might interest people:

A tip you can also reduce the CPU usage by using lower resolution videos if you think 40% of your CPU is too high.

I hate to sound lazy, but can you throw a few links to some that work? I have tried quite a few on wincustomize.com and have changed the filename to wmv or mpg when donwloading, with zero success as of yet.

I can’t get the .mpg files from the first post to work only the .wmv ones will run. I get the error

“Windows DreamScene has encountered an error.

The video file format is not supported, or there was an error decoding this video file. Please try another video.”

I ran across a few good Scenes at this site www.dreamscene.org/gallery.php

For those that don't already know. I just wanted to let you know that "Dreamscene" was actually designed in partnership with Stardock Systems. The .dream format is actually a format used by "Deskscapes" which you can obtain from Stardock.

If you have Windows Vista Ultimate there is a free version of stardock for you that allows you to play any .dream file inside dreamscene and also allows you to make your own dreams. However you do not get unlimited downloads unless you're a paid subscriber to at least one of their products.
