OK, so I'm updating HWInfo and see a link for Driver Agent. Download and run that and it says 13 drivers are bad. Click on a link to download and it wants $29.

Go to device manager and check a few of the same drivers for updates and Windows says they're all up to date.

    Who to believe?

One thing about Dell, they're not great in updating their drivers. I know the Nvidia Geforce 310M card could use updating but Nvidia says since it's OEM check with Dell but, like i said...

Windows only checks windows update for drivers which hardly ever has new ones.

The best place to get latest drivers is from the device manufacturers website, IE for nvidia cards go to nvidia.com but if your drivers are working why bother updating?

I don't trust those all in one driver updater things, most are laced with spyware.

you could well of opened the door to spyware.
them sort of adverts on web pages look so convincing but are purely there to make money. i wouldnt trust them as they have nothing to do with the web page software you originally went there to get.

first thing i would do is boot into safe mode and run a full virus scan.

edit: google is your friend or savior.

I never entrust driver updates to third party software, i'm even careful with the updates suggested by windows updates. I still find the est way is to get the drivers manually even though it takes a little more time. Aome of those softwares are totally legit, only they ask you to pay for something you can do yourself.

I have used drivermax(free ver) for years, never a problem and "yes" there are updated drivers you cannot get yourself that drivermax gets - HD audio controller,PCI Bridge,,ect, system devices-in device manager ect, drivermax has limit of 2 free a day, and has pay versions if you want to update more than 2 a day.

    +1

    Cheers

Why, there was nothing in the article to suggest a virus or spyware. I have running AV/AS programs an it wasn't flagged.

Thanks. I'm not about to pay $29 for something that may not even work but may be willing to try a free version.

hopefully you will be ok then.
clicking on these so called advert links means you have invited them in so may not show up as a threat as youve opened the door to it.
for example: your house is like fort knox with the best alarm system but if you open the door(click on the link) and invite it in then the alarms wont sound.
for an advert that says you have so many old or damaged drivers and wants to charge you to fix them like the quote i posted from someone else, would you trust it?
