Best to stick to manufacturer drivers for maximum compatibility with the exception of the VGA drivers

Actually that is not always true, it counts a lot on the users experience and what is best for them. Personally I prefer all the device specific up to date drivers, then again I can easily handle most issues if they arise....................................

I say first go to the manufacture and download and save the latest last drivers and firmware and bios and updates those first and then go to the specific hardware manufacture site and see if they have a standalone update to download to which you can use to update your manufacture drivers to updated to lastest drivers example intel wifi....your manufacture has the latest to 14.0 but for your O/S and intel wifi card make they have 15.8 I would then download theres and then install it over the older drivers and you have the more up to date stable drivers to use. So there are instances where the manufacture has the last drivers should the company no longer exists or doesn't support anymore but if they have a later version more stable I would say download it but before install make sure your manufacture drivers don't already work good enough for your needs already and then you can decide if you should update the drivers. I do know Nvidia for my Windows7 have worked fine but AMD anything past 12.10 is crash prone and unstable video causing restarts and shutdowns.
