hi all, i tried out W7 on my laptop, it doesn't really meet minimum requirements but i thought i would give it a go anyway. All went rather well, and it ran ok, except for drivers for the video controller. so i went investigating and looked on the dell website and downloaded what i needed. but when i tried to install them a message came back saying 'not compatible with this OS' which wasn't surprising seen as how they were for XP. apparently no drivers exist as of yet.
Is it down to Dell or Microsoft to think about creating some drivers? or am i going to have to accept that my laptop is just too old for W7?
i am not upset or put out at all, it was just an experiment to see if an older machine could cope, some probably can!
so, i went back to xp for now. but, if anyone knows if there are drivers available for W7 please let me know.

if vista drivers are available, try those.
Or, you can make yourself up a list of hardware, chipset, disk controller, vid controller, etc. Head over to the makers of that hardware and see if they offer generic drivers in vista flavors. -
i didn't see any vista drivers for my D400. but i like the idea of going to check out hardware manufacturers for generic drivers. thanks

I know that W7 was successfully installed on other notebooks with the same Intel 855GM chipset as D400 has. For example, google for windows 7 and Toshiba portege M200.
