My laptop just randomly started showing lines on the screen. sometimes it becomes completely pink like this picture. some times i boot and the screen is complete black i dont even see the bios screen, but the pc is still loading because i can hear the vista sounds and i can use my fingerprint reader to log in, but i cant see anything but black. I tried rolling back the graphics drivers and it was working but i just got this blue screen message just now so im not sure what to do. i haven't installed anything or updated anything before this it just happened randomly.

Mine gets some like yours, but green instead of pink.
Not sure about yours, but mine has to do with some connection, because when it happens it does only on certain screen positions (ie. 80 degrees angle). So not a big deal.

Pink screen is a sign of fried video RAM. You have a defective Nvidia GPU.

You might get it to work at times but the end game will be a dead GPU.

Try out an external monitor anyway...

I had this happen to me when I was upgrading my drivers, and I was about to cry. I tried upgrading to a driver from laptopvid2go (i forgot what version) but the progress bar was taking about 30 minutes and usually it didn't take that long with other upgrades, luckily I didn't interrupt the installation and thankfully it completed after an hour or so but my screen was jacked up like the pics you posted, and again thank God I could make out the mouse pointer and a cancel button which I clicked, then I shut down and restarted and the screen was back to normal and without hesitation I rolled back to my previous driver. Maybe if you can navigate try doing a system restore.

man i hope its not fried, i got it in august of last year so its a little over a year old. how long is the warrenty a year?

i tried it on an external i get the same thing, so i think i can rule out bad lcd connection.

im going to try and do a system restore if i can see. but sometimes when im using it a little yellow triangle with an exclamation point will pop up in the bottom corner of the task bar. i cant click it or do anything with it, then from there it usually goes black.

If it is dead what do you guys think hp will do. Its obviously defective gpu's shouldn't last a year and die, its not like i damaged it. Any chances they will realize this, cause im broke at this point.

this guy seemed to have the same problem and got it fixed for free. nothing seems to be working so im gonna call them

Another thing you can do is uninstall your video card driver (and use a driver cleaner in Safe Mode) and if it still shows up (which it probably will) then it's a defective GPU.

It seems like calling them up is your best bet. I'm sure you'll still be covered. Sound like you're really pissed, that'll probably get their attention. ;)

I'm really thinking it's a driver issue, because that screen is giving me flash backs because I'm so traumatized.

i dunno because i don't even see a bios screen most of the time. i wanna try and work on fixing new drivers or rolling them back, but its hard to work on it because most of the time the screen is complete black. the pc loaded i hear it but i cant see anything. i haven't had time to call, hate to say but its on the bottom of my list right now because of architecture but hopefully i can get to it tomorrow.

well i did my research and as 660hpv12 said the 8400's are defective so we called hp back. showed them this stuff.

    http://www.nvidia.com/object/io_1215037160521.html

    http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1045810/000119312508145974/d8k.htm

we talked to a supervisor then finally a case manager who finally agreed this was not our fault and they are going to fix it for free. There sending us a box and i should have it back in 14 days.

I'm just posting this in case it might help somebody else who has the same problem with their 8400 and are out of warranty.

Great to hear. Unfortunately you will probably receive the same type of card that is defective, which will fail again in the near future.

No one has made any real fixes to this defect.

yea do you know if nvidia released a later version of the 8400 that isn't defective? I'm pretty disappointing that hp hasn't made this public yet, dell has a bios update on their site that says it makes the fan spin faster due to failing gpu's. Hp hasn't said a thing, on the phone first we got a technician who had no idea about the defect, then we got his supervisor who also had no idea, then we got the case manager, we told him it was unbelievable nobody knew about the defect and he said that he knew, i guess they just hope that you don't get to a case manger and pay the 400 bucks first.
but they are fixing it for free so i really cant complain anymore.

Its actually been in public already. Though they are still giving out the same revision of the 8400m meaning no changes have been done.

The BIOS update is just a band aid fix. HP and Dell are just doing it to keep your notebook alive till your warranty period expires. You are actually lucky to be able to persuade the case manager.

I suggest you ask for an integrated card (x3100)

dam i wish they would change those cards i would get an integrated card but i use the laptop for 3d max at school. i'm not sure how the integrated card will render, but i guess having a slower laptop is better than having a non working one

Well Just Got My Laptop Back From Hp And Amazingly It Was In Mint Condition. I Wrapped The Whole Screen In Saran Wrap, And It Was Still On When I Got It Back. They Didnt Even Wipe The Harddrive, So This Whole Ordeal Set Me Back About 3 Weeks, But Its Back Just In Time For Finals Week.
