ok i've been trying to download SP1 via WU for a while now but it just won't show up :( seems i have some driver issues. Question is, how do i find out what drivers are causing the problems? i have downloaded all the updates released via WU but vista SP1 will not.

Why don't you try downloading it manually at Microsoft's website.

I think I read somewhere here that the fingerprint scanner may be why it is not loading. Don't quote me on that though.

Because that can be a really BAD idea if you have one of the problematic drivers. There are multiple reports of folks doing this with catastrophic results requiring a reinstall of Vista. Some of us with known bad drivers have gone the manual download route but ONLY after creating an image of our C: drive to be safe.

I had the same problem. If you have Conexant HD Audio, the drivers even when updated, it leaves behind on old file (chdart.sys) which Windows Update still sees and won't show SP1. There are some posts here somewhere, but I can't seem to find it at the moment. I checked to see that this file wasn't being used, deleted it and after two manual checks for updates, SP1 finally showed up.

It's ok to suggest that folks use the standalone to install SP1, but at the same time you should also mention that if the user has one of the known bad drivers that they should be sure they have a backup of the OS before they proceed.

Feel free to contact Microsoft about why you can't access SP1 through WU yet. They are offering free tech support for SP1 upgrades for the time being.

I recommend a reinstall of the entire system for SP1. I found the system snappier with SP1 on a clean install rather than updating to it on an existing install of Vista. This way, you won't have to worry about driver conflicts.

You still have to load the drivers, and they may still conflict with SP1 if you get the wrong versions.

Just read the MSKB article, and go through your drivers folder. When you see a file name that matches one on the list, check its version. You can't find them all in the Device Manager (as I had a problem with a fingerprint scanner driver, and I don't have a fingerprint scanner).

I went on HP's site and key in my Product number to check for drivers and saw there were a bunch of drivers that needed to be updated so that i did. but before and after in my device manager this still shows ( see attached). first i checked it out showed me that the device is not working properly, did a driver update found nothing so i googled it and found that microsoft said that its ignorable.

does anyone else have that issue?

My problem was I had the SigmaTel audio drivers installed on my DeLL laptop. Once I uninstalled them SP1 appeared. :p

edit: This is the another reason why Vista gets a bad rep and people just go back to Windows XP. This should not be happening on this OS. MS needs to figure out a work around other than to put it back on the lap of the end user.

They didn't, they put it back in the lap of the developers of the bad drivers and the providers of the hardware. Microsoft can't provide a workaround because of a poorly coded driver!

It doesn't matter who's fault it is. Whether it's the developer, MS or Vista's fault. The OS is the one people aim their anger and frustrations at because of stupid things that happen with this OS.

It doesn't matter if all you want to do is complain about it. It matters a lot if you want a solution. Microsoft can't provide a solution to a bad piece of software written by a third party. This is not a stupid thing that happens with the OS, it is a stupid thing happening with a bad driver, plain and simple.
What do you suggest Microsoft should do, patch the operating system because the driver is bad? Next thing you know we'll have hundreds of patches to the OS each for a different driver because some HARDWARE MANUFACTURER is too damn lazy to provide timely patches to WELL KNOWN issues?

The problem is not whether I or someone else complains about Vista. It's now irrelevant because all parties involved have their thumbs in their you know what and nothing has been done about it other than people trying to get SP1 to install from WU. :p

The audio drivers were the main reason for Microsoft's delay in releasing SP1. None the less, very few OEM's have made official driver updates available, although there are drivers available that work.

Since Windows update *must know* what is wrong (because otherwise SP would show up), a simple message would suffice: "SP1 is not available to you because you have a bad driver: this! Please update your driver and retry later."
No need to manually search the knowledge base, no need to browse to the drivers' list by hand (are we not in the third millennium? Shouldn't this be a job for a machine? Shouldn't this marvellous OS be simpler to use than its predecessors?).

It does not seem that difficult.
But maybe it is, for Microsoft.
