I have XP on one partition and Vista on a second partition. To conserve hard drive space I want to install programs like Firefox on a third partition and then come back and install Firefox in Vista in the same partition. For example I'd do a custom install of Firefox in XP causing it to install in:

    E:\Programs\Firefox\

I would then boot into Vista and do a custom install of Firefox from Vista to the same folder and overwrite anything that it asks about. How does Windows handle this type of setup? I know that you want to install the program in each operating system so that registry keys are set, etc but as far as the place it is installed to is concerned, do you need that to be seperate as well and if so, why? Thanks.

It would probably work with FireFox and some other apps. But I would be wary about trying to do this with something like MS Office. Might have a ton of conflicts. Also for apps like Photoshop, it works faster on the same partition.
