You can dual-boot the two, but how does that question stand in relation to Bit-Locker?

Means run BL on both OS'. Are you set up that way? If not, its beyond the scope of your ability to help as I'm not going to write a paragraph explaning things. If you are set up you would be able it hit back right away anyway with something more relevant.

I think he wants to encrypt his whole hdd while dual booting...

Now, from pure enryption logic, this would only work if you encrypt the partitions individually or they share the same key.

Alternatively, only encrypt specific files, not the HDD.

Woops, never mind. I thought you meant dual boot linux / windows, not Vista / 7.

Vista and W7 have different BL implementations. Have read lots of articles. MSFT suggests installing Vista activate BL then turn off. Then install W7 and activate BL. W7 with BL on can read Vista parition. Vista with BL on cannot read W7. I'm OK with that. Just I have both OS' isntalled on sep partitions already rather than their suggestion of install Vista blah blah then install W7.

Any input? BTW this is like surgery. Cant just go in and experiment and then expect result for the patient. Have to understand first.

If you don't mind, I'm just curious.. Why do you want Vista and 7? I can understand XP and 7, but what is your reason for wanting to keep Vista? Not saying you shouldn't, like I said.. Just curious! :)

You're coming to us for help, so it wouldn't give your wrists carpel tunnel syndrome to write a paragraph clearly describing what you're trying to do. It allows us help you.

It just so happens that I can read up on Bitlocker and discover that this feature takes some work in order to get it running on a dual-boot system. Read here:

    Brief summary: http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2006/05/bitlocker.html

Example with instructions (Vista, Server 08): http://blogs.technet.com/richard_macdonald/archive/2008/07/19/3091052.aspx

Is there a reason to believe that the example involving Vista and Server 08 will not work out with Vista and 7 64-bit? It might be worth a try, just to see if it works.

Otherwise, consider using a program like TrueCrypt, which can encrypt pretty much anything.
