I use vista home premium and I've seen desktops where the shortcuts are in a grid along the bottom of the screen as opposed to on the left side of the screen. How do you do this? Im sure it's something simple and easy but Ive never known how.

1 more thing! Anyone have any links to sites with cool vista themes? Perhaps one the resembles OSX? (if not thats fine, just want to customize my desktop more)

What you're looking for is a "dock." I personally use ObjectDock and my desktop looks like the new OSX Leopard =P

Could you tell me where I'd find this "dock" or if it's complicated to set it up or whatever?

Just google ObjectDock or RocketDock. I thought you just meant putting the shortcuts along the bottom of the desktop, but RocketDock or ObjectDock would be perfect for you, and they are simply to set up. Just drag the shortcuts you want down to the dock and it is good to go.

Oh, i didn't get what you meant but if you mean a dock then don't listen to thain and get rocketdock unless your an underdog lover. Objectdock is just as free as it is but it's faster and better supported.

Which is better, rocketdock or objectdock (most recent free versions)?
What're the pros/cons of each? I went to their sites and they look similar in function, is 1 "better" then the other?

Are you saying that your quick launch bar is along the side instead of the bottom? If so you simple drag it down to the bottom or any side for that matter.

Object dock by far. Rocketdock is just a cheap clone. And it updates slow. Check their features page.

Because he wants to customize his desktop more? =P

A linked was posted in the Windows Vista desktop thread not too long ago that allowed for some tinkering of the appearance of the GUI. You can find the topic here and links to the downloads are in bdogg's post. I've used the Vista Messenger skin and its rather nice although I personally wouldn't want to have my whole desktop grey. You could also look into Windows Blinds if you want to customize further but IIRC you have to pay for the software.

Don't you mean why do you want to copy Arthur/RiskOS/NeXTSTEP?

The icon dock isn't a new concept by Apple by any stretch of the imagination! The Steve Jobs Reality Distortion Field has been at it again lol

well it is a dock. how does dock work? the site describes real well what it does and does not

the latest version on the site is quite simple to install and customize. it has good forum support

changing automatically? nah, i do not think that the dock is smart enough to know when users decide to remove apps or change directories

    cheers ...

Well i only asked because it appeared to be more detailed then I've seen many docks. It does the whole "dock category subfolder" thing where when you highlight or click on a dock item, rather then opening a tradition "window" like in vista, it looked like the dock opened a vertical colum of files or folders or whatever. Does it do that automatically? As other docks like objectdock dont

And also it appears the window borders look like Macs on all the windows, in addition to the icons and so forth. Do these come with that install pack and convert automatically? Or is this just something you have to hunt down icon by icon/skin by skin and make-shift yourself? Or perhaps in 1 all-encompassing theme option?

if u read the site, it says what the package offers. the dock category subfolder is what Leopard dock offers at the moment on the Mac. We call it stacks. The current package comes with pre.configured stacks for a vista (US version) environment.

The icons within this dock come included. U can chase down and get more if u want (on ur own). The theme of the current package is Leopard. There is a section to teach u how to create ur own theme for the dock, if u feel adventurous.

    cheers ...

1 more quick question about objectdock:

Is there a way to have the start button options put into the dock? Primarily the ability to shut down/go to sleep/restart etc? I ask because I'd like to hide the taskbar completely, but then I obviously need the taskbar for the start menu power options stated above. Is there a way to make this stuff accessible from objectdock?

EDIT: Nevermind I found out how!

iShut is built in in this RKLauncher version

u meant for the objectdock and not for this RKL dock, right?

    cheers ...
