I would say buy a laptop with Vista Home Premium or above, and when Windows 7 is released, you will be eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 7. For more information, see the details available on each OEM's website.

I second this, it's time to move on. While XP was and still is a decent OS, it's getting up there in age.

Wasn't there a thread about how Win7 is better for gaming than XP??

If you need to buy it now, get Vista with a Win7 upgrade.

If you can wait until the 22nd of October (I believe this is the release date) - get a laptop with Win7 immediately.

If you're buying now, get Vista so that you get a free Windows 7 upgrade (check the OEMs site for info on this).

If you can wait until October 22nd to buy a laptop, then just buy one with Windows 7 then. I wouldn't go back to XP unless I absolutely had to.

It depends on what games you are playing. If you're playing exclusively 2007 or later games, Vista should do fine. If you'll be playing classics a good amount as well (2004 or earlier, generally, but not hard and fast rule), Vista/7 compatibility issues may occur. It depends on the what your balance of games is.

Advantages of Vista: DX10 for newer games (only really worthwhile with 8800+ nVIDIA, 3870+ or 4850+ ATI).

Advantages of XP: Better compatibility with older games, better performance for some older games.

Web surfing it doesn't matter a whole lot.

As for upgrading to 7, I voted for both upgrade and don't upgrade. Basically, it comes down to whether you get Vista or not. If you get Vista, upgrade to 7 - it adds UI and performance improvements, and introduces a minimal amount of compatibility issues. If you get XP, which would be primarily to insure top-notch compatibility, don't upgrade to 7 - if a program won't work with Vista, it almost certainly won't work with 7. Yes, there is XP Mode in 7, but that only helps for 2D desktop applications, not games.

As for 2K, it will have better compatibility than Vista for some programs/games, but many games require XP nowadays. It also isn't as good as XP for Windows 9x games. It also is going to hit end of support in July 2010, which is near enough that it should be a consideration. XP's April 2014 date is far enough off that it shouldn't be a concern unless you keep your computers for an unusually long time.

Vista Business with XP Downgrade will give you maximum flexibility if you are uncertain - it will allow you to run Vista, XP, or 7 (due to the upgrade period currently in effect). Technically Ultimate will give you this, too, but Vista Ultimate isn't worth the price difference.

As someone who plays as many early 2000's games than 2007 or later games, and more games that won't play nice with Vista than DX10-supporting games, I "down"graded to XP and plan to bypass Windows 7 as well. Most people who buy gaming laptops won't fall into this category, but it depends on the games you play. After all, it doesn't take DX10 to stress a video card.

There are very few games that people still play that don't work in Vista. Most games from 2000 onwards have patches or work-arounds to get them to work in Vista if they don't natively.

And XP might have better performance with some older games, but it's usually a matter of getting 150 fps vs 100 fps - no noticeable difference to the gamer.

keep in mind that every pc has emulation of every other os. www.vmware.com www.virtualbox.com and even virtualpc from microsoft :)

but yes, get now vista, and update if you like, to win7, as you get the update for free. spending extra money on it? no. getting it for free, why not? having a choice is nice.

Vista 64-bit and get the free upgrade to Windows 7 64-bit. Naturally Win7 is better in about all aspects (even uses less system power) than Vista. But, XP is a nono. Yes Vista had a very hard and rough start, but now, it's all nice, especially the 64-bit version.

To have the best experience with your system you will need:
    • 64-bit processor such as the Intel Core 2 Duo or a AMD Athlon/Turion 64 X2 or better.
    • 2GB of RAM or more. 4GB+ if you play games.
    • Intel 4500MHD or a Geforce 6600GT or better video card.
    • Newer the technology inside your system, the better Vista/Win7 will like your system.
