i recovered some pictures from an old hard drive but it seems there are duplicates of some pictures. is there any software that finds all duplicate pictures and lets me choose which to keep/delete?

Well you can order pictures by file size and duplicates will be next to each other for easy deleting.

Pretty sure that Google's Picasa has some decent deduplication options

You might try dupfinder.exe which is part of Microsoft's Support Tools for Windows XP.

I used to have an app that would find duplicate images based on some pretty interesting algorithm. It would even find duplicates of the same image that were two different sizes like an 800x600 and the same image at 400x300. I'll dig around and see if I can find it again. It had a slider that you used to control how close a match it had to be to be considered a duplicate. The interface then showed you the two (or more) dups side by side and let you choose which one to delete or ignore. You pointed it to a "master" directory and it created an index of sorts for that directory. Then you pointed it to a second directory to compare against. It did a great job.

Found it! It is still a freebie. I used it five or six years ago. Highly recommended.

There several good pogs for the removal. I used DupliFinder, but my friend also used this one Find and Remove Duplicate Pictures, Duplicate Images, Duplicate Photos, Duplicate Videos
May be it will help you. -
