From what i've heard 2.0X and lower is the safest bet if you don't want to screw up a burn for DVDs.

Well actually it does. Some burners like some media better than others. A good safe bet is to use Verbatim disks and burn them at half the rated speed. If you're needing Dual Layer, then still use Verbatim and burn at 4X (if your burner allows it).

Hmmm....so u mean it is best to write dvd's at half speed of it's max?? For example, my disk allows burning from 1x to 16x( or at least that's what is written on the disk cover)so it is best if I burn it at 8x??

Pretty much. I always burn 16X at 8X, and CDs at 16X.

Thnx man...that's what I wanted to know!!! oh one more thing My Sony DVD RW can burn dvd's at 20x max but My laptops Writer can burn the same disk only till 8x max...so my question is this, which writer should I use to burn my dvd's and why?? OR lets say I'm gonna burn my dvd's at 8x so does it matter which DVD RW I use to burn those??

It doesn't matter. Just write at half the speed of the drive (or less). I burn everything at 2x or 4x, and I always use dependable, highly recommended media.

I would tend to use the desktop drive if available, but I'm not sure if it's better quality.

I'd use the desktop burner because it will probably have a lot less jitter. Full size drives are mechanically much better than slim drives, hence the 8X limit on your laptop drive.
