I am trying to find software or anything that will copy my dvds for back-up at a higher quality. The software I use now usually copies at 50% or a little more (so it says). I do notice a difference in the two. The copied is much more foggy and less clear. Does anyone no of any programs that copy at a higher quality or anything I can do to adjust this. Also, I want to copy all of the dvd, including its contents (menus, making, extras). I cant find many that copy in entire onto one dvd.
Thanks for any help,
Mike.

I have no problems with DVD X Copy Express, but the only problem is the MPAA shut them down and they can't sell their software anymore.

Compromise.
Most Dvds hold up to 6 to 9 GB's of data.
These programs try to squeeze it onto a disc made to hold 4GB...
Do NOT expect a perfect copy.
Dvd ripping software may use different compression engines to achive this. And no mater how many people swear by one over another, they all must make compromises to get you that golden 'one' disc copy.
I use Intervideo 'DVD Copy 2'.
Many hate It. For me it fast, EASY to use and gives me what 'I' think is a good balance of 'FULL single disc'copy and quality.
But, I invite you to please search the web for reviews on this and other(maybe much better) software options.
Later you may experince...pixellation problems "white blocks" or other artifacts. (I have a theory why and am still hard at sorting it all out) All apart of the fun!
With the release of Dual layer Dvd discs you might get much closer to 'perfect'.
But, This may be all for not......
Soon to release-
Macrovision's "RipGuard" DVD will stop 97 percent of DVD rippers by crash them using the 'Universal Disk Format' to prevent the file from being ripped to the hard drive before it can be copied.
Copy hard and copy fast, sir! (I trust a crack will come soon, though!)[8D] -
Thanks for all the good info. I will search for some good software and stick with it.
As far as the crack down on ripping DVD's. Your probably right but there is always someone ready with a counter crack down. Bless those guys!

i use DVDXCopy Express and i think that it makes a pretty good copy, i am able to save space by taking out all of the extra fetures (ep, diffrent audio tracks, subtitles) and everything else besides the movie, works pretty well for me

Bah, use DVD Decryptor to rip the DVD to your hard drive, this will copy everything to the HDrive without the copy protection. If it's an older DVD, so from the early 90's or earlier than chances are it's going to be under 4.3 gigs. If this is the case use Nero and just burn everything to the DVD -/+ R.
If what you copied to the Hard Drive is larger than 4.3 then use a program called DVD Shrink and have it compress it down so you still have everything. Of course compression usually means lower quality but it's barely noticable most of the time.
If you don't want to compress than you will have to choose to burn just the movie part without the extras and menus. Choose the reauthor button and drag over Title 1 to the left and then go back to Compression Settings Tab and uncheck all the extra Audios such as the French or Spanish ones. Also, you don't need 2 or 3 different English audio tracks, keep the 5.1 channel English audio and unchedk the 2 channel audio. Keep an eye on your compression ratio, I try to keep it at 85 or higher. That means it's only compressing 15 percent or less. The higher the number the less the compression and the better the quality.
Both programs, DVD Decryptor and DVD Shrink are freeware and easily downloadable from the net, just do a Google search for them.

When using Shrink, you'll get better quality if you take the just the movie and not the whole disc. If you don't have any software to burn a DVD Video, output the file to an .iso file and you can burn it with DVD Decrypter.

Get a dual layer burner, and then good luck finding affordable dual layer media... Store bought movies are dual layer, that's why you gotta shrink them to fit single layer stock.

I've been using DVD Decryptor and Shrink and am happy with the results. Alot of people over on videohelp.com have also recommnded DVD Rebuilder.

do not use those stupid programs like dvdxcopy or dvd2copy, those are just utter crap. to get your movies to 90% copy on dvd5 media (4.3GB)
download DVD decrypter, VOB Blanker, DVD Shrink (these are all free, legaly)
#1 DVD Decrypter, rip the DVD to your HDD once you have an image of the dvd on your HDD
#2 open up VOB Blanker, open the DVD within the program, hit blank --> Auto T, this will remove those stupid FBI warnings and P-UOP as well as any useless extra features and such, it keeps all your menus and of course the main movie. make sure you rip it to another HDD (the same HDD will take forever and will thrash the hell out of your drive)
#3 once its blanked close vob and open up DVD Shrink, open the BLANKED movie, click on menus, go custom ratio and set it to 60%, this will leave the menus at a good quality and have the main movie at the best possible quality. shrink the movie to the first HDD (back over to the other one).
#4 BURN with any software, dvd shrink has a plug in for nero and it works good.
OR
if you dont want all the extras and menus and stuff just use dvd shrink and rip ONLY the main movie.

Most of the major software mastering programs like Nero or Easy CD Creator can burn dual layer discs, but it has to be a fairly recent version to support it. I think Nero started supporting in version 6.3. I could be wrong about that. And you need a dual layer disc of course.

you are allowed to make as many copies of your own legaly bough dvds, you just cant sell them. have you seen dvds from rental stores like blockbuster and rogers? they are scratched to high heaven. Losing a 20ยข is a hellva lot better than losing a $20

Pr5owner,
Copy that, sir!
What do people DO with these rental discs?
I find that the more stupid or silly the movie, the worst the scratches. Any movies with: Young Nude females(or deprived of clothing),explosion Violence, helicopters, car chase, flip, roll and BOOM!! digital, gore, Faster! FASTER!! no/little plot(or point) staring superstar 'Rap' "actors"[)]and super rich Hilton's daughters[
]....ah.....good luck sir!

Actually from near me the worst ones are the ones that little kids and teenagers really like probably because parents let there children use them and they scratch the heck out of them by leaving them out and dropping them.
Sometimes I think the dvds would be in better conditon if they were rubbed on sandpaper for an hour.

I've got a question in regards to this subject. Hopefully I can get an answer. I don't want to make a new thread because it will just make more clutter and it is similar to this.
I have a movie that I want to put on my harddrive for when I go on the road (Seinfeld Seasons 1-3) but when I use ImTOO DVD Ripper (Awesome piece of software) I copy them to an AVI format with the DivX codec. The quality isn't very good. It is somewhat blocky. This isn't a problem for Seinfeld because I want to conserve space. What I am wondering is this: how can I convert a DVD to AVI format without losing much quality. I would rip the movie using DVD Decrypter and then turning it into an ISO using DVD Shrink but I want it in AVI format so I can watch it easily.
How can I acheive this? Is there a setting I could use with ImTOO? I've tried copying it at 1440x900 (my screens native resolution) but it's still blocky.
Thanks! -
You can use Daemon tools to create a virtual DVD drive and run the ISO from there.
You can run DVD decrypter then DVD Shrink then create the ISO image then load it in the virtual drive using Daemon tools.
It IS so time consuming that I would rather carry the disks. You can get a slim case for your DVDs and accessories:

I use it for the mouse, USB drives and DVDs/CDs.

That is a good option but I would prefer it to be in AVI format. Running it on a virtual drive wouldn't be bad, so I may end up just doing that.
Thanks! -
Back to my original question: What is mode is everyone using on DVD Decrypter? I believe my time consuming step was because I was using File F instead of ISO READ. However I don't know what to do to be more efficient.

I read the product information on your software Elias. There has to be some custom options such as frame rate, compression, etc etc that you can tweak on your program. AVI quality is not that good. MPEG 4 which I believe is DVD quality is better.

Thanks. As of now, I've got an ISO instead of a video file, but I am looking into the MPEG4 solution.
I'm putting the rest of my Seinfeld DVDs on as well as my Family Guy, but I am doing those in AVI format since I don't need perfect quality. -

Elias,
No one has answered your orignal request. A VIDEO FILE solution. I've used "Dr. Divx"...and hated it! Gave me video blocks big time. On the freeware side you will get into...'Bit rate calculators' and have to use 4 or 6 different programs for DAYS and what have you. It will get scary quick. For the one clickers....still looking for a sound one in the bunch...that doesn't cost a....well you know!
Anyone? -
I did answer his question, there are several programs out there to convert a DVD to a file format like DIVX, that's MPEG4. I've used Gordian Knot to convert but it is complicated at first to learn how to get all the settings right. Once you have the settings all setup right and save them it's pretty easy.

I...see you did. -
i recommend xvid over divx, if you download divx you get a bunch of garbage you dont want (toolbars and junk) xvid has nothing except what you NEED
also recommended and off topic
Quicktime alternative! run mov files in WMP10 or whatever program you wish in windows, quicktime simply sucks
real alternative! same as above, real actually sucks more than quicktime
people say they dont like WMP10 but when i use it, its fast, never freezes up or is stupid. and it plays everything i want.

Elias,
The reason its blocky is you're stretching it. The resolution of a DVD is 720*480. DONT SAVE IT TO A FILE WITH A HIGHER RESOLUTION! It makes it bigger and ugglier. If you save it to 720*480 or anything less you can just go full screen in WMP or whatever. Itll make it much smaller and better looking.
I need a freeware app that can make a DVD backup to my hdd thats less than a gig for 4 hours of video. It also needs to be able to do the whole DVD to one file, not each VOB file. Anyone know anything freeware or cheap? Even if quality sucks horibly?
"To err is human, but to really mess things up takes a computer." -Anonymous -
Try FairUse. It's awesome. You set the desired filesize and it will compress the movie to that size. The free version's only limitation is that you cannot exceed a file 700MB in size.
