Right, I hope someone can help. Got a windows 7 laptop HDD that's dying (plan is to clone to a new hdd). It was blue screening on boot, so i used:

    1) hirens boot cd to boot in Seatools and did a long test which fixed some errors
    2) This didn't help so i f8'd into Startup Repair - command prompt, where I ran chkdsk /r. This took about 4hrs and did loads of
    3) PC no longer bsod's at boot, but I ran into the Black Screen of Death. Basically means chkdsk removed all permissions.
    4) f8'd again into startup repair - command prompt
    5) Took ownership of the whole of the C: drive (single partition where everything is installed/saved) using TAKEOWN command
    6) ICACLS to set permission on the whole of the C: drive to grant full control to anyone in the administrators group (i.e me)
    7) Rebooted - I was able to login to my pc normally.

The only problem now is that the whole directory structure has me as the owner, and only me as having full permissions to everything. What I ideally want is a way to to reset all the folder ownership AND set all the permissions correctly.

e.g "C:\windows" should be owned by "Trusted Installer" and have full permissions to System & Administrators, and Users should only have READ permissions. At present, I'm the owner, and I'm the only one with full permissions.

Does anyone know of a tool that can reset all this? I've googled and theres a secedit command, however microsoft state that this should no longer be used on vista and above.

Sorry to give you the bad news, but this situation is not recoverable, period. There is no tool such as the one you envision, and there never was. All you can do is save your own original documents and data, and copy them to some external media. Next step is a reinstall of Windows, from scratch.
