Not real sure about Vista but I shrunk a partition on XP using parted magic without losing any data.

Well, I have room on my HDD, but Vista won't even let me make a new partition without formatting my entire drive.

Here's a tutorial, there may be others...

    http://www.maximumpc.com/article/ne...ve_for_free_without_formatting_or_losing_data

apparently it has a way of backing up your files too.

One word of caution, it can take hours. Do not interrupt it.

Once you shrink your existing partition, you'll have unallocated space. You then assign a letter. D if you don't have one already. I then transferred all my documents (pics, music etc) to it (default) and left C for the OS and programs.

i used paragon partition manager but BE SURE to disable standby/hibernate/screen saver before attempting to do this cause it works nearly after the windows restarts so if the computer went on standby it will ruin everything , and also be sure to back all ur important data JUST in case , to speed up the process defagment the harddrive before starting to do this , 32bit version is here http://download.cnet.com/Paragon-Partition-Manager-Free-Edition-32-bit/3000-2248_4-10904411.html

I've used EASEUS Partition Master twice before and it never failed. First, you tell the program to shrink your primary drive, then with the unallocated space, create a new partition. EASEUS Partition Master will then restart your computer and boot it up, then perform both operations before it restarts again. End result: a shrunken primary drive and a new partition with no loss of data. Partition Master Home Edition is free to download from http://www.partition-tool.com/. The only disadvantage of the Home Edition is that it only supports 32-bit OSes. I'm not sure how well it would work, or if it even does, on a 64-bit OS.
