So I just go my new laptop, and rather than having to install everything I want to use through my slow-*** internet, I'd rather just sort of "clone" everything(sans drivers) over to the new machine. Anyone know of an easy way to do this? Does that Windows Easy Transfer do it? It says "program settings", but not whether you can transfer your programs over in their entirety ready to be used.

Edit- That's a negative on the programs.

a very long shot is to backup/export the registry trunk of software, and import it back onto your new comp. This is not a perfect nor a working solution, only a suggestion to try out. And it could also reduce your new comp to a lame system.

Programs write and update registry entries at many points, using OS version and environment as basis, copyright also plays a factor in paid softwares, thus it is not so easy to transfer apps from one comp to another, when/where a licence key is being required for the app in question.

    cheers ...

Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery would be ideal for you...but it's not free as you can see...i've used it before at work to clone a machine completely w/ all its settings and load unto another computer's HDD. It does an excellent job...and so it gets my recommendation.

So would Norton Ghost work then also? I've already thought about doing that but it would also copy drivers and whatnot over. Could that somehow harm my new machine?

I guess Ghost could do the trick too...about the drivers thing...I never thought about that...but if you're transferring to and from the same Operating System there shouldn't be an issue.

are you move from one os to anythey?

    or same os both machine

if just clone laptop hard disk and do windows repair update drivers on new machine install any new one and you shound be good to go

I wound suggest clean install and just move you data and install program you end up with machine that run much better plus none of old junk you don,nt want from other machine
