I'm looking for an email program or site that could integrate with gmail and could notify me if my recipient has read my message or not.

It's similar to getting notified when sending ecards.

    Thanks!

Outlook (not free) has read receipts. Thunderbird might, but I'm not sure.

Read receipts are very unreliable. Not only does your email client have to support it (Thunderbird and Outlook), but the recipient must also have an email client that supports it. If you send an email to gmail/yahoo/etc, the read receipt request is usually ignored anyway. The recipient must also acknowledge the request - no email client automatically sends a response, so the recipient can choose to say "no" and you won't get a response.

Unfortunately people are bad at responding to emails because they're easy to ignore.

As others have said, Thunderbird has the function, but it's up to the receiver to acknowledge whether they opened the email or not.

Once someone clicks OK, this is the return receipt. If they click cancel, there is no notification.
