    I want to be able to burn all my avi file movies onto watchable DVD films, which i can use on a DVD player, but obviously i need a piece of software to re-encode it. Which is a good one to use? I know Nero does it, but i don't have that for Vista. Any suggestions?

    I suggest ConvertXtoDVD which works very well for me on Vista. I've burned about 30 DVDs and I've never had a bad burn.

    Well if you want something FREE (not a trial) and works excellent;

    1) Avi2DVD
    2) ImgBurn

    Since you have Vista, why not just use Windows DVD maker? It's not as full featured as others, but for your tasks, it's more than just enough and VERY easy to use.
