I know you can go and end many of the processes in the task manager in order to get better performance from your computer when you need it, but what processes are essential to the proper running of the computer and whoich ones can be shut down with no problems?

keep ur anti virus/spyware/firewall etc running
sort the list by user name and all of the ones that have your name by them are nonessential and can be closed without sacrificing system stability. However, some of your open applications may depend upon them and they will crash or terminate if you kill the process. I would suggest guessing and checking. kill one process at a time and try gaming....if it works...then go to msconfig in the run menu and prevent it from initializing on startup. Then you only have to do this stuff once.
From my experience, terminating other minor processes did little for performance gains.
End processes for better gaming?
