So I am trying to install office 2003, when it gets about 25% through install when the following error message pops up.

Error 1304. Error writing to file: C :program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\1033\DataServices\Desktop.INI. Verify that you have access to this directory.

This actually was happening when I would run random applications (basketball simulator, exam software, etc.), and I tried re-installing office, and now I cannot even access that! Help is needed ASAP, thanks a lot!

desktop.ini is a system file so like PhoenixFx said this is going to be a permissions error.

Try to copy the installation folders from the CD to the hard drive before installing Office 2003.

    GOOD LUCK!

I am the owner of my laptop, and the only user. What more can I do to increase my privileges?

And copying the files did not work.

I also installed this successfully on a prior attempt; any ideas?

What OS are you running on? _Vista? XP-Home, XP-MCE, or XP-Pro, or something even older?

Basically, somewhere along the line the access permissions to that directory got messed up, and as a result, either your user account or the system account no longer has read access to the directory in question.

The simplest thing to do is to use explorer to find that particular directory (i.e., C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\1033\DataServices\) and check to see what permissions are set on it from the properties dialogue box.
