I was at Fry's yesterday and there was a Microsoft rep in the notebook section. One of the Fry's guys asked her about SP1 and she said they were told internally not to install it - to wait until later this month. She said it was driver related but she was not sure.

    Thought that was interesting.

Now, I have had SP1 sitting in Windows Update on my HP AMD-based desktop since March 18.

Are you sure she was an MS rep?

WU won't deliver SP1 if you have had driver issues.

At least they're using Vista. ;)

Yeah but big companies don't use WU to update each PC. They push updates out to all the PCs from some computer that administers all the PCs on the network. And it's probably easier if they give everyone the update at the same time... so if some of the machines have incompatible drivers, that would explain it.

If vista sp1 comes via automatic updates, you can get it no problems. If you dont see it listed, it is because there is a driver problem specific with your hardware. Once those are fixed, then you will get it via auto update. If you install it on your own away from auto update you can run into trouble. They are just following the common rules...you make it sound as if we should put a red flag on sp1 but that is far from the case.

That's right, even Microsoft is not going around the safeguards built into Windows Update, to install SP1 on machines that don't have the proper drivers installed. Where is the "news" in that?

Didn't claim it was "news", just thought it was interesting as I said. Seems a lot of people want to "hunt" for SP1 if they do not have it show up in WU. So, there is a good reason for that as stated.

I un-capped "not" in my original post. Sorry.
