It has "download IE8" text on the top now, it also had the same for FF3 and I vaguely remember seeing ones for Opera too, but I could be mistaken on that one.
and they're not like banner advertisements, it looks like an officially endorsed suggestion from yahoo

Yes, IE 8 right here in vista 64 browser, but sadly they don't support 64 bit browsers.
I haven't seen Opera yet. -
Makes me wonder if they're going to sign that contract from Microsoft.

I'm sure it's to promote the Yahoo toolbar and set up Yahoo as a search provider for the search box.
-
Isn't the Yahoo toolbar kind of obsolete if you have yahoo search in your search box already? I used to use the Google toolbar until customizable boxes became available.
Does Yahoo just want their logo in more places? -
I feel the same way, but it never stopped Yahoo from distributing their toolbar, and getting other companies to bundle it with unrelated stuff, like Sun bundles it with the Java download etc.
In fairness they probably provide a bunch of links to different Yahoo pages... but you can do that with the favorites bar, so I don't care. It also included some antispyware thing last I checked... but of course you can get that stuff elsewhere too.
So, basically I agree with you that toolbars are unnecessary now... but I guess the rest of the world hasn't caught up with us yet.
They want more links to Yahoo pages so when you go to their pages they can sell the ads and get money for that.
Ever notice how Yahoo pimps out every new browser?
