Hi,
I know I am not the only one experiencing this issue, I have searched the web over the last few weeks and encountered others who have mentioned it.
I recently installed Vista Ultimate(32 Bit) and upgraded the video drivers to ATI Catalyst 7.2. This was a clean install of Vista. Before the driver upgrade, the Vista GUI was functioning with the windows supplied drivers, but game performance was nowhere near where it should be.
Attempting the upgrade - the Catalyst Driver upgrade program was caught in a continuous loop, which resulted in a blank screen, after a necessary hard reboot the screen remains blank after the initial windows loading screen.
Here are the steps/workarounds I have attempted so far:
1. Extract the Catalyst 7.2 drivers and attempt to manually install them via the device manager. This results in the same symptoms as above.
2. Attempt to uninstall the windows default driver, install the standard VGA driver and then install the Catalyst 7.2 drivers. Same result.
3. Catalyst 7.1 drivers. Same result.
4. Clean installs of Windows Vista. Same result.
The strange thing is, I also tried some beta drivers from Catalyst during an RC2 try-out and they worked good. I can only figure something has happened in driver programming at ATI/Catalyst between that beta driver and the current driver that has caused this issue.
From other posts around the web, people have been offered various explanations from bizzare conflicts between the ddr ram and video drivers to laptop motherboard issues with Vista.
Given that the ATI drivers were compatible a few versions ago, what's going on?
System Configuration:
ASUS A6VA - Pentium M 770
Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit
ATI Radeon Mobility x700
2 GB DDR2 RAM
120 GB 5400rpm Hard Drive

I am experiencing the same on my Asus with an X700 128MB. It's not a big deal, the stock drivers that come with Vista work absolutely fine (until you get to gaming, but if you want to game, you shouldn't be running Vista in the first place). It'll probably be fixed in a future update.
-
I'm the rare breed that wants to game AND use vista
I think this is a problem, as it means that NO new drivers from ATI will work. I don't think ATI have even acknowledged this issue... -
. mobility 9700/128mb
. 3700+ amd
. 80 gb 7200rpm (triple boot with xp and linux)
. vista ultimate
. 7_2 ati mobility catalyst (direct download from ati) since day 1 -been using ati driver since RC2 till now.
= ZERO issue
might want to check ur chipset driver!
cheers ... -
Hi ghn, I know the driver is functioning for most people, thanks. I want to hear from people that are having this issue
-
I think this issue only exists for people with Asus A6000 ATI X700 cards. It's unique to us and us only. Maybe we should just wait for Asus to release a new video driver.
-
interesting that u mentioned only for asus, came across this link:

quite odd

) and catalyst 6.8(i think in vista) but havent bothered with games with it...not only that the drivers i have dont even support opengl...im sticking with xp until they improve vista for gaming...the only time i think i will install games on vista will be when halo 2 comes out for it...

I have the x700 and had almost zero issues. The only minor hiccup was after installation the ATi icon refused to launch Catalyst Control Center. Actually I couldn't launch it from anywhere but after about 10 or so double clicks it was working
-
I have the same problem!
System Configuration:
ASUS A6VA - Pentium M 770
Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit
ATI Radeon Mobility x700
maker, you have resolved the problem?
Mark -
nope, not solved yet. Humm..I think budding could be right about this affecting asus laptops. This is pretty harsh. I don't believe Asus will ever release a driver for anything other than the current line of notebooks. They are notorious for the worst support of all manufactures. Yikes might be time to start looking for a new notebook.
-
now, before anyone starts getting excited, this hotfix doesn't acutally work. But if it did, you problems would be solved:

I started having problems after my post using the CCC with the 3D part but after i re started the runtime it's working fine, My computer automaticall updated the driver when the problem started, re starting the runtime fixed it. I have a Dell E1505 with Vista premium. so it's not just Asus

For people with a A6Va Notebook and problems with the Catalyst 7x driver in Vista look here:

Kurim, the chief adimin of the austreiber.de forum, create a driver for all a6va notebooks under windows vista. -
You can use Windows Update function to update your driver . You mustconnected to internet , and then run Windows update . it'll solve the problem on your machine and automatic download and install them for you .
I had been do this on my laptop , and it's work ok . -
For all those people whom are still stuck on this issue I will settle this once and for all:
I’ve got an ASUS A6000 series notebook (A6VA-Q016H) paired with the ATI Mobility Radeon X700, running Windows Vista Enterprise 32-bit on the latest Catalyst 7.9 display drivers. How did I manage this? Thanks to Ruud Ketelaars’ Mobility Modder, it’s quite easy to tailor your fresh downloaded drivers for the mobility series. Installation is fully reviewed over here. If it’s not working you’re definitely doing something wrong, so blame yourself!
If you’re not a cheap f*ck, please donate as I did! Good luck to ya all!
Cheers, moi
