My Sony updated Vista and now takes forever to shutdown. Hit the shutdown button under start and is says "Configuring updates." That takes 15 minutes then it reboots and says configurinig updates once again for 15 minutes then the desktop loads then I can do a shutdown from start bar. Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong here?
This happens everytime I shutdown the computer 5 or 6 times now.
I did initially hit that little button in the start bar that says something about install updates and reboot or something? I am not real familiar with Vista and am on Xp machine now. Also do you Vaio owners install the Sony Vaio updates and what do they consist of? Necessary? Thanks in advance for any help.

Type in Windows update in the search box located at the bottom of the start menu. Click on Windows update, click view available updates. What's showed?
-
I'll have to get back to you on that tomorrow night. I am currently at work so I do not have my laptop with me.
-
I checked and it seems it didn't complete.

Then I ran through by installing again after waiting through the configuring updates twice and got this.
-
Ran the install, restart config. x2 and got this. It seems like the same thing over and over again? Is the button next to the padlock icon in the start bar always suppose to have the yellow shield with ! on that says install updates. I hit that and tried it from there too still nothing? I clearly must be missing something.
-
Sorry about the multiple posts. Btw..I type in the windows update in the search and it still says a bunch of the same....
-
Have you moved the location of the user folders? I moved all mine to a second internal hard drive and windows refused to install any updates.
-
It's a new laptop and I haven't moved anything. The only thing that has been
done was to add the usual AntiVir,spybot etc. and I did do the semi-clean vista install posted here by I think NinjaNoodles. It seemed to work great. -
did you try manually installing the updates? i.e. hit the install updates button in the windows update window
-
Yes I have tried that as well. I have hit every update or install button from everywhere I could think of and it still shows what the images I posted show that they are waiting to install basically. A couple of times it said failed but I think i poasted n image that said last update was successful but it still says there are 32 to do and it keeps configuring.

Recently I had an issue where one of Vista's updates broke one of my important programs (it was a game, OK? I admitted it). It seems that even when Microsoft tries to fix something they just break it and make things even worse.
I would recommend that you uninstall the recent updates that you have and try reinstalling them; if they cause problems, just don't bother to install them. -
Sometimes it's windows update itself that becomes corrupted. There was a solution on Microsoft's forums I'll have to dig up. Does it give an error message when the install process fails?

I encountered a problem with Windows update as well just recently. Somehow it picked up an update for XP. -
Can I remove something that I don't think is installing? I mean everytime it restarts it still has the same updates ready to go. And it keeps popping up the window that says it has to restart to finish installation with the countdown..In my one screenshot where it says updated on whatever date at some time it would say installation failed or similar. I'll try the tips soon and see how that goes. Thanks. -
I had a problem a while with installing updates. Your problem is a little similar to what happened to me. It gave me an error and wouldn't download the updates and another symptom was when I open the "Turn Windows Features On or Off" box it would sit there and say "Please Wait" and wouldn't do anything else.
Look at this, I hope it helps:

This is what it says the resolution is. I get nervose when I see Reg. delete!!! Any suggestions. It is similar problem but not sure if it's the "same". If you look at my screen shots I posted I think it actually thinks it is completing the update MOST of the time but not all???
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, follow these steps:1. Click Start, type cmd in the Start Search box, and then click Command Prompt under Programs.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
Note If you do not have administrator rights and permissions, start the Command Prompt program by right-clicking Command Prompt, clicking Run as administrator, and then typing administrator credentials.
2. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
reg delete HKLM\COMPONENTS /v StoreDirty
After you run this command, reinstall any updates or components that did not install successfully -
I remember trying to delete that Store Dirty thing. It did absolutely nothing. It said it didn't even exist.
-
Nothing has worked. Any more tips? It seems that everytime the computer is on a pop-up with the counter saying computer has to restart. I think it keeps duplicating the list of updates it says are ready to install. There are 32 different ones but after the duplicates listed it equals about 3-4 pages??

Yes Patrick I did. This is what happened.
I deleted all as you said then when to look for updates. It found 37 to be installed. I hit ok when done it said 4 succeeded 33 failed gave error 80246007.
It then restarted then came up configuring updates for 30sec. then it restarted again to "please wait" then said configuring again for 2 minutes then it went to the desktop.I went into look at windows update it said windows is up to date?? then I hit the update history button and it shows the 33 failed and the 4 that worked KB938194,KB29735,KB41229,KB38979. I tried to install the 33 and in 2 seconds it said all failed and new error 80246005. Hope this helps troubleshoot cause I don't know. Thanks!Attached Files:

Hmm... this definitely seems like a huge problem. Maybe you should reinstall vista.
-
Write down the KB article number for all of the failed updates (I know 33 is a lot).
Go to http://support.microsoft.com/?pr=kbinfo and search for the KB numbers. Download the updates and install them manually.
I've seen this happen before. It's usually easier to do this then to figure out a cure for the Windows Update problem.
After you install the updates manually Windows Update should function normally. -
just a silly (no pun intended to the OP username) question, are ur system date and time reflecting the correct time zone and all?
cheers ... -
I know the time is right but will have to check the rest. I am at work and do not have my laptop with me....Regards.
Could comodo-spybot-avast-ccleaner have anything to do with it?
I installed them not too long before this happened. Granted I have
never had a successful vista update?? -

Since you have already tried the purge tips, I think you are down to just two courses of action.
#1, take Deputy963's advice. Download each update and apply it manually. Do them in the CORRECT order though!!!
#2, reinstall Vista. Something is VERY hosed here. It may be some tweak, the antispyware or ccleaner, it's hard to say. But obviously SOMETHING has really screwed this up.
If it were me, not knowing WHAT screwed this up and what else MIGHT be screwed up and bite me in the ass latter, I'd go for option #2.

No problem about the PM S.C. I think its better and easier to reply in the thread!
I looked at the link deputy963 sent and didn't immediatley see where it said I could install the update I searched for? At one point it said I needed IE5 or greater to save something I can't remember. Any tips on what I am missing or an easier way?
Since I did Ninjanoodles semi-clean and have the 2 discs that you make and not a Vista disc this should take me back to new right with all the bloatware?
I guess you just stick the disc in and let 'er rip? -

There are no shortcuts. Like I told you before, if I were doing this I would be reinstalling Vista, and not screwing around with this and having to wonder when the other shoe is going to drop. When things are this hosed, it's best to NOT try to fix them, because you don't EVER know when you have completed fixing things because you never know ALL of the things that are broken.

Definitely agree with Gary here... Reinstalling Vista is much easier.
-
I am not trying to shortcut anything. I am trying to find out if I am missing something that others have fixed without immediately jumping to reinstall Vista everytime something is wrong. As I said I went and searched for the kb #s and the pages it took me to I never saw a save-download-install or anything. I am no expert for sure so unless I see "Hey download this update here-->" then it is vague to me.Sorry. I have Firefox they want me using ie5 for obvious reasons or I had to go to a different site so I stopped for the night. If I am missing this download button or whatever at that site and you know where it is and it's not too much trouble and you want to post a pic of it with a big circle that says "right here idiot!" Please do. I wrote the kb#s down then deleted the files in the folder as told previously and tried to update again and when it failed I checked the numbers and they were in a diffferent order?? I guess this weekend I'll have to buy a external HD and transfer stuff over and hope the Ninjanoodle discs work.

Did you try stopping the windows update service, make it manual start up, and then restarting it after a reboot? This might solve your problems.
-
This was another thing that seemed a bit different on my computer or I missed. I went there but could not double click anything that said services or anything else for that matter. I even right clicked everyting looking for a menu. I did see a square or stop? button, a forward and backward arrow I think a resume button on the top center of the page and clicked the stop and nothing changed-moved or blinked? Then went back and nothing resumed either. Is this to stop it if it is in progress or just the updating service in general? -
It is the "Automatic updates" service. Make sure the service "Background Intelligent Transfer" is also not disabled, but set to manual. -
OP I had the exact same issues. this fixed it for me
-
Still no luck with this YET! I haven't tried this fix but for others with this problem se link below or just update to the newest Comodo assuming you are using it as your firewall. Just thought I'd post this info. for those searching threads for answers.
