A former Google employee and her husband launched a new search engine Monday called Cuil, aiming to topple Google by indexing more Web pages than the search giant. Cuil, of Menlo Park, California, is led by Anna Patterson , a former leader of Google's search index and her husband, Tom Costello, who researched and developed search engines at Stanford University and IBM. The two, president and CEO, respectively, met at Stanford.
Russell Power, the third cofounder of the group, also worked at Google on search indexing, Web rankings, and spam detection. He works as vice president of engineering at Cuil. The company, which shaved an 'L' off its name to become Cuil, said it has indexed 120 billion Web pages and can provide results organized by ideas with complete privacy for users. Cuil, pronounced Cool, is an old Irish word for knowledge, by the way

ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
that is a really stupid name.
-
Looks like they've still got a lot of work left to do to me. I did a search for "grizzly bear" just to see what came up, and the seventh result (or fourth depending on how you count) wasn't actually about grizzly bears at all, rather claiming to be some anti-virus site that looked fake. So I think I'll be sticking with good ol' Google.

Very nice search engine, going to use it as my main one for a while, and report back on my experience
-
google works so nicely in the right hand corner of mozilla, I don't care much for this cuil. I also don't like the layout when you search.
-
I've tried it and it's not accurate as yet. The descriptions of found searches is nice though. Hopefully it'll improve as it matures.
-
And just where is this guy gonna get enough $$$cash$$$ to have server farms larger than google ?
-
When I type in Sager Notebook, it doesn't even find their actual site. It just shows lots of PC Torque stuff.
-
What would be really cool is Cuil pretty much bans/blacklists all google related links
Unfortunately, that's not the case.
-
Hmm. Looks promising, but I dont see them "toppling" Google anytime soon. I have it bookmarked tho and will try it out on occasion.
-
To be honest, I use google a lot... and I really mean a LOT! It WOULD be nice to have a change now, and Cuil does look rather attractive (not by search results
).
-
But yea, I understand you don't like it. I'm not used to its layout either, but I'm looking forward to see how it changes in the future. -
Cuil is one more crappy search engine. No one can beat Google for sure.
-
-
I tried it....typed in a few key words of topics, and some were on target, some were off.
But when I typed in Notebook Review, it brought up NBR as the first! Which was, as always a good thing!
I would have to play around with it more..to decide.. -
I tried it the day it was launched love the looks but it cant find anything I want to on threre >.<
-
This is interesting. The search results need to be improved though.
Also on feature:
- Where is the shows results on specific language only?
- Need more localization.
- Number of results per page
- That explore by category thingy... only shows some games and, just unneeded?
I like how it lines up the results though (in columns), it is nice for skimming. It still leaves a lot to be improved, and I am willing to see how it develops in the future. -
They tested this on BOL with their names, and they got crazy weird results
-
the name cuil, isnt so friendly it doesnt roll off the tongue like gooooogle, i didnt even know it was pronounced as cool, i thought it was more like quill. lol
weird anyway i wont be cuiling anything soon.
