I can just press the start button, open my computer, right click something on my desktop, press back...almost anything. it will randomly hang, and ask for a restart. sometimes I can't restart it or end it, and I must manually restart my laptop.

Using 64 bit Windows 7, latest windows updates.

Off the top of my head, things running all the time (since the crash can occur even after a fresh restart, can't be firefox or any non-start up programs).

    Avast antivirus
    Sony Vaio utilities
    Logitech mouse drivers
    HP D4260 printer drivers

I've read this problem all over the net, and the same response "reformat" everytime, and it does not solve other people's problems. what is going on?

I also had these random crashes (especially after extracting files with 7 Zip), when I delete video files from desktop, empty recycle bin, right clicking in desktop, etc. But now they have disappeared after a clean install (nothing changed after the install though).

These crashes are almost always caused by a bad shell extension, and may not have anything to do with programs running in the background. You may use ShellExView to disable your shell extensions, and find out the culprit this way. As a general rule, it's always some bum third-party shell extension that causes the crashes, so start disabling all the stuff that's not from Microsoft, and then re-enable extensions one by one.
