Hi All, Hope u are well!

I have a really annoying problem. Explorer.exe terminates. (Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close etc etc.) It dosen't matter if you click on send or don't send error report explorer restarts immediatley then crashes again with the same error 0xc0000005. It constantly does this in a loop. If you end Explorer.exe manually it does not come back automatically. If you restart Explorer.exe manually it then starts looping again.

It does it on all proifiles and in safe mode.

I have ran Syybot S&D, Adaware, Malwarebytes anti malware, Panda active scan pro, the resident McAfee (yuck) virus scan, CCleaner, Trend micro housecall, Windows cleanup and registry mechanic... all of which removed appx 450 issues between them. Also run SFC /scannow and chkdsk

The error is still happening. ####### ####!

    Any ideas anyone??

    Thanks in advance

Run msconfig to check whether there are any unwanted processes starting automatically. If you can't find anything there, I suggest you pop a Windows disc to do the Repair option; the Repair option will copy over and replace the majority of Windows system files. It should clear up the issue.

Sorry, I should have also said that I have checked Msconfig and all is as it should be. As It's a Dell PC and it's 2nd hand the user does not have the proper Dell recovery CD's/DVD's. It's XP and it has the Dell recovery partition on the HDD so when booting into XP setup it cant find any previous XP installs to repair. I can get round this by deleting the recovery partition then the XP will see the Os entry and repair as normal. However I do not want to do this unless absoloutly nescasery.

    Thanks

    Hey Bog,

I did run the mentioned programs in safe mode yeah, with the exception of AdAware as the service dosn't start in safe mode.

Thanks for taking the time to check into this Bog!

It may come to a reinstall but that is not acceptable in my point of view!! I hate being beaten by crappy MS problems LOL! I will allways try to fix any issue.. time is not a factor here! LOL!

You could also try searching through Vista's error logs to see what exactly is causing the problems.

You could always try reinstalling the OS. But yeah, make sure there aren't any video files on the desktop which use unsigned codecs.

Is the system running XP SP2, or XP SP3? Microsoft has a knowledgebase article, KB938828 that attributes a crash of explorer.exe with error "STOP: 0xc0000005" to a race condition that can be created by some A/V or print applications that use notification balloons.

The KB article has a link to a fix from Microsoft that can be d/l'ed from here, that was released on 7/24/2007.

I don't know if that's going to be the fix for you, although it might be worth a look if the system doesn't have SP3 on it. You might also try disabling/uninstalling any A/V and print applications to see if that affects the crashing.

Beyond that, are there any more details on the particular error generated when explorer crashes, and is the system generating any minidumps when it crashes?
