I keep getting random "explorer.exe has stopped working" errors. It occurs when I click on start or open windows folders. nothing in particular seems to trigger it.
any idea? i've read other people having similar issues, but havent read a fix yet.
I read something about maybe firefox causing the issue? hmm It only started a few days ago. The only things I've installed recenty:
AOL IM
Yahoo Messenger
Update to AVAST
Update to Firefox

get into the event log and show in detail what the info is about the crash.
-
Could be a virus or malware or something along those lines.
-
Backtracking, removing (reinstalling) the ones you installed one by one and see.

Common problem Windows 7 x64
-
Yea, this is very helpful for finidng out the cause of problems. Try it.
Click start and type "event" and click on "event log" -
I've had 7 x64 for a few months now and it did not happen to me once.
I do not know what common means to you. -

if it would be common that any of the now millions of windows 7 x64 installations crash the explorer 50x a day, i don't think the general census of everyone would still be "that os is awesome"
-
This explains everything.

I have the same prob on both computers. Vist 32bit 1720, and Win7 64bit M17X
-
Then I would say you have an issue with a process or application software that is running on both computers. As mentioned above, take a look at the 'event' log in 'Administrative Tools'.

I had a similar issue in XP when explorer.exe would crash whenever I would open a folder with a video in it. Turned out to be a bad install/upgrade to a media codec package. With that in mind, are you sure it isn't any particular folders?

I know of 10 or so people running win 7 64 bit and a handful of people running vista 64 bit. At least half have that problem.
Mine does it when I right click. -
Man, You just know the wrong people. It just be a program...
-
It happened for me too with right clicks after extracting files with 7-zip, deleting movie files.

Yep, that's a sure sign of a bum shell extension, always. Google for Shell Extension Manager, and disable your shell extensions one by one. You will find that there is one program you have installed which has added a flaky context menu handler to your explorer shell extensions, and this is what crashes explorer. I guarantee you, with all third-party shell extensions disabled, Explorer will not crash.
P.S.: To clarify, what happens when you right click on a file, Explorer will call all the DLLs that have registered an interest for that file type. If any of these crash, then Explorer will crash.
Explorer.exe crashes like 50 times a day
