I just bought a used laptop and am trying to transfer some files from my external drives to it but it keeps saying I don't have permission. I went through the steps to take ownership but nothing is working. I can use these drives on the computer I created them on but not on this new one. Do I need to change ownership on the computer I created the files on? I am trying to get my music on the laptop I just bought so I can send the old one off for repair. Thank you.

Are you plugging the hard drive directly into your new notebook with a USB enclosure/adapter or did you just share/network your old notebook to your new one? Also, it is CP(Copyright Protected) music files from iTunes or something?

I am just plugging it in by usb. I have 3 drives and all are doing that. It is not a clean install. every time I click ok I get errors.Do I need to change permissions on the machine that created the files?

You're not trying to copy and paste your ENTIRE old hard drive over, no? There are certain files on the hard drive in the Windows and Users folders which are protected and won't want to be copied.

If not, it could be a problem with the old hard drive. By problem, I mean if you set a hard drive password on your old notebook, it could be causing the permission error...even if you removed the password restriction from the hard drive.

I ended up having to go into safe mode to change permissions for some reason. It is fine now. Before it only showed up as drive f and not WD passport. When I just tried to click on the drive it would give me the permission error. Went into safe mode and fixed it and now it shows up correctly on list and I can access files.

Interesting. It was an issue with the whole hard drive's permission then, yes?

Yes. Never had a problem with permissions on an external drive. Oh well, got it fixed, at least for now.
