Running Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit SP2 on an Asus G50VT-X5.

My laptop mysteriously switches from color to black and white within seconds of logging in on my external monitor through HDMI (even though the laptop's primary display works fine). I've tried fiddling with all the controls in the Nvidia control panel (9800M GS) yet nothing happens. I've tested the monitor by itself and it works fine so I know it's a software issue in the laptop.

This has occurred previously and it got fixed by doing a System Restore. I'd rather solve the problem now without doing that every time this happens. Can anyone help me?
