by slow i mean slow, and its everything thats slow, except games.
FireFox takes ages to notice that ive been typing, OB takes 10-30 seconds to notice that i have had the mouse on an icon before it will do anything its just EVERYTHING runs slow any idea on how to fix this - because its very poor and its so bad that im thinking of going home (cost over £30) just to get my 32bit disc and reinstall the 32 bit version

anyway i can make it as fast as my 32bit version was?
could it be because i still have the content of windows.old on the main drive?

nope set to high performance but the CPU is going crazy with only a single firefox page open as well as installing a demo - but its been like it for a couple of days i had finsihed waht i had to say before it was all written down.

how can people say 64bit is better, its very poor and very very slow
if i cant find a way to fix this then i am reinstalling 32bit becuase the comp is bearly usable like this.

"Clean Install" usually implies that you have formatted your drive (or partition) and started with clean space.

You've done something wrong, or like wave suggested not enabled some options (though, I don't think his suggestion would explain the type/magnitude of slow-downs you are experience).

If it were me, I'd find a way to install on a clean partition. All anecdotal evidence that I have had/read about, typically indicates a snappier/more responsive experience with Vista x64 than with it's little brother x86.

Don't be so rash...you can't possibly make a rational conclusion on this one experience.

when installing the option was clean install
believe me no one would be able to use it like this vista 32bit was twice as fast as this the comp cant even keep up with what im typing

I'm not doubting what you're saying about the performance...I'm not a guru, but it sounds like your "clean install" could very well be a bit tainted, even though it wasn't an upgrade.

Has it been this slow ever since you installed it, or has it got this slow since a certain point, maybe when something was installed.

too be honest i cant remember, i have a very poor memory :D
im sure that it was no where near as bad this, but i havent installed anything, except FM 2009 demo and a couple of my games

could it have something to do with the fact that i still have the windows.old folder with over 35GB content?

I can't see it beeing the windows.old folder as 64bit won't be using this folder to access anything.

You tried restoring to before you installed the games, probably a bit of a long shot, but maybe worth a try, also, have you done a virus scan? (Might be worth doing these, just to rule them out before you decide to go the 32 bit way again).

I wish I could help you just fix the problem...but I honestly cannot stress enough. With over a year's experience with Vista x64/x86 I have NEVER been more impressed with x64 and so disappointed w/x86. It could very well have a lot to do with the drivers you used.

How much RAM do you have?

i think im going to restart computer - when i first installed 64bit i didnt use Hibernate and if im remembering correctly it wasnt slow or anything maybe that has something to do with it?

yeah Comodo anti virus check was done yesturday and found a trojan but nothing else also run windows defender and AVG anti virus as well

looking at my processes it says my physical memory is at 71% while CPU is at 18%

Man...if you've just done a clean install and you already have a Virus, i wouldn't even try to "fix" it. I would go straight to a clean install.

Once you're done w/a clean install use something like CloneZilla to image that, so you don't have to spend the time installing/updating...just reimaging.

i dont think i have a virus or anything the trojan that was discovered was i a song that i have had on mycomp since i got it and its only hjust started saying that its a trojan - every other scan i did didnt say it was a trojan or anything so i dont think its a virus or anything thats done this.

Check if you have DMA enabled on your hdd(s). If I remember correctly your laptop is in IDE mode so maybe your hdds have fallen in PIO mode..

Be sure you have updated and 64bit compatible drivers first and foremost.

But, outside of that, it sounds like something went wrong during the install or maybe even your harddrive...

right i just uninstalled vistastartmenu and the change in performance is great, a lot better - not sure if it was the restart or the removal of vistastartmenu but its clearly better much better, it means i will have to have the windows taskbar :( as i was using vistastartmenu as the startmenu wasnt available in vista 64bit when using OB

so which ever one it was its improved it alot - so happy ending :D

Sounds like you had some sort of conflict with the Windows Shell.

Unfortunately Windows is very particular with its SystemTray, only way to replace it is to replace the entire Desktop shell with something like Emerge, which prevents explorer.exe running at startup.

Glad to hear you got everything worked out :)

yeah im glad that i have it fixed - even OB works better :D
still annoyed about having to have windows taskbar on, but i would rather have that then a really slow system :D

and the CPU isn't going crazy liek it was before :D
