How do I shiw from Fat32 file system to NTFS with out formating the disk or reinstaling windows?
-
Straight from the Horse's Patuit (Windows XP helpfile):
"To convert a volume to NTFS from the command prompt
Open the Command Prompt window.
In the command prompt window, type
convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs
For example, typing convert D: /fs:ntfs would format drive D: with the ntfs format.
Notes
To open a command prompt, click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.
You can convert FAT or FAT32 volumes to NTFS with this command."

I said with out formating?

I believe that just converts, retaining the data. I have converted drives before, and I believe that is how I did it. You might be able to understand this: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/convertfat.mspx

olyteddy is correct. This will 'convert' the file system without formatting the drive - it is a non destructive command meaning it will not destroy any data.
I did this exact thing to my Acer - no issues. -
How long does it take?

when I did what you tell me, it said:
The type of the file system is Fat32
Enter corrent volume label for drive c:
What should I do? -
If you don't want to use the command prompt, you can use Partition Magic to do the conversion, it's a great program.

It took about 45 minutes on my drive, I guess it depends how much data is in need of converting. I would use the convrt command in xp over partition magic. With partition magic (and I do like this program) you need to have a backup or you might be sorry. For some reason I've had PM fail when resizing or doing other partition functions that destroyed the partition and I had to go back to the backup I had. One other advantage of the convrt command is that it's free. The last copy of PM I bought cost me ~$45 bucks.
