I like FF, but seriously I think this new URL bar is horrible!![]()
I tried all the tricks in about:config, nothing would make it like the FF2 bar.
Article with solutions:
Firefox 3 'awesome bar' not awesome for all
FF2:
![]()
FF3:
![]()

Yes, it looks clumsy, but it's useful though.
-
Not sure yet.. thought i prefer the old one.

I actually like it, I think it's a great addition.
-
I like the new look.. but how do i disable my FAVORITES from showing in the URL BAR? I dunno I find it annoying.. lol.
-
There is a trick in about:config, but that would disable the drop-down completely. The other trick is to install a mimic add-on.
-
This is part of what I'm talking about, you can go into about:config and play with:
browser.urlbar.matchOnlyTyped
browser.urlbar.maxRichResults
However, none of which will make it perfect.
-
I like the new URL bar. After using it for a little bit I've gotten quite used to it. I like how it searches through your bookmarks and history for sites. There are some annoying parts to it, but the added functionality more than makes up for it.
-
It's ginormous. I like how Opera 9.5 does it - double height is the maximum item size.
-
For me, most of the time I use the address bar (ctrl+L btw
), it's in a new tab (which is blank). Therefore, even if the list of suggestions is long, it doesn't interfere with anything. For me.
-
gals/guys - when the server is not busy again, download the extension called OLDBAR and install it.
u'll have the FF2 URL Bar style back
cheers ... -
I like it...
I'm sure some addon will change this...
-
yea same the whole reason i have my info erase when i close firefox is so i don't see it in the drop down bar. nothing bad, i just like it clean now i have to look at this.
-
didnt you guys use the beta or RC's? it has looked like this for months and months.
-
I've Been using FFrc2 for so long that i've gotten use to the new url bar and find it better than the previous FF2
-
nope...........
-
I love the Awesomebar, it's awesome. I thought the old Firefox 2 location bar was useless, but now i find it quite useful for my everyday tasks. Another thing that separates it from Opera and IE.
-
Yeah there is an add-on, haven't had the chance to try it yet.
Nope, was waiting for more add-ons support.
I don't know, maybe I'll get used to it. I haven't upgraded all my machines with FF3 yet, a lot of the add-ons I use still don't have FF3 support yet. Right now just testing FF3 with one machine. -
Yes I've been using FF3 since Beta 5 was released.
Agreed
-
I didn't like it at first, but now I like it better than FF2. It is nice to type in part of address and have the one you want pop up.
-
This is the thing, most of the type-in URLs that I go are not in my bookmarks because either I remember it or I go so often that's in the history already. When I type 2 letters and starts going to to my bookmarks, it becomes kinda confusing.
-
With FF2, I type in part of the address and it pops up the ones I want also, and the one you go often/last will appear at the top. So I don't understand what you mean.
The new FF3 bar is more for keyword type-ins I think?
-
Yes keywords and tags for your bookmarks.
-
I love everything about the new URL bar...the big font, the icons, the website description. Everything. It's an improvement, definitely.
-
I'm still testing...we'll see.
also for everyone else: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6227
someone just sent me this: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.urlbar.matchBehavior
supposedly lets you control the awesomebar search features, haven't tried yet. -
I just tried playing around with Browser.urlbar.matchBehavior, the bar will still be the same, just how it searches the type-ins. I know about the oldbar, I will try it later, thanks.
-
I love it, makes my history search convenient.
-
Definitely get the FF3 extension:
OLDBAR
That works best to bring back FF2 location/address bar. -
At first it was a little weird, but now I love it! Definately an improvement. I just wish it was customizable, but I'm sure an add-on will turn up sooner or later
-
I'd like to agree with saying that at first it was hard to get used to, but now that I have I am finding myself liking it more than than the older bar.
I also found the toolbar to be a bit chunky, but after making the icons smaller I found it to be much more bearable. -
Ok guys, I'm starting to get used to it... so maybe it's not as bad as the first impression.
-
I love it.
-
I like the new bar as well but I like Opera's new bar a little better as it's more powerful.
-
I like the smartbar.
-
If it's too big, you can try the stylish code found here: http://userstyles.org/styles/6162
I personally like the bar. If anybody uses Launchy or a similar application launcher, I'm sure they'll understand how useful this feature can be. -
I changed the theme to "Aquatin redone" and the bar is much better, try it.

Thank you coffee maker, I was looking for a fix for that, thanks.

The address bar is terrible.
To be honest, being able to search my bookmarks is nice functionality, no doubt about that. And being able to do a full text search on my browser history is fine too, for when I can't remember the url, but want to open that page I found yesterday which had a title including something like this.
But it shouldn't interfere with what the address bar is supposed to do.
When I type x in the address bar, it means I want to go to a site whose url starts with x (xkcd, usually). I *don't* want it to suggest a random youtube vid because it had an x somewhere in the movie id at the end of the url! -
How do you use about:config to disable the dropdown?
-
I figured out how to bring the address bar to old style.... to what you type.
in the address bar,
- type about:config
- go to browser.urlbar.matchOnlyTyped, set it to true
- (optional) go to browser.urlbar.maxRichResults, set it to 6 (so you would get less results, making it look cleaner)
Thats it.
________________
Next alternative or add-on to what I said, get the extension:
- OLDBAR:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6227
Now after the extension, it will work (and look) the same as Firefox 2.
Without the extension, it will still work the same, but will still have two line items in the address bar... as opposed to the single line in Firefox 2.

If you want to disable the dropdown,
- go to browser.urlbar.maxRichResults, set it to 0 -

All you have to do is type about:config in the address bar and change browser.urlbar.maxRichResults to 0 -
I just went back to the old style bar with Oldbar

thank god

I've realized that I rarely type anything in the address bar. I have everything I need up on the Bookmark Toolbar...
-
Thanks man, that helped! That's the one thing I forgot to do: make toolbar icons smaller. Indeed, the awesome bar is a bit too big, but this fixes it.
-
I think it's absolutely useless. I'd rellay like to have the FF2 Addressbar back!
We can ask for the old toolbar here:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=407836
Just add a comment at the end of the page... maybe they'll listen to our request! -
Read through the thread... there are ways to make the address bar like FF2's. No need to officially change it especially since I like it.
-
AKAJohnDoe Mime with Tourette's
With 256 thumbnails spread across 16 SpeedDial tabs, I hardly ever go to the bookmarks. -
It is very nice to use. I don't need to sift through my bookmarks when I want to find Vista ______, I can just type that in. Or if I want to look for funny youtube vid's I marked i just type in "youtube". I love it.
