The FN key (to change volume, brightness and LCD) stopped functioning. I did a complete restore of the system and it fixed it for 2 days...all of the sudden it's not working again.

    I need it!

    HELP!

    Thx SO MUCH!

I searched google about this and I saw that you should try to go to the sony vaio site and download a driver for the Fn key. Other people had this problem when they changed operating systems.

This might be the site you need to go to:
    http://www.vaio-link.com/downloads/register/register.asp?l=en

The problem is that the Fn Hotkey Utility breaks when XP SP2 or some other patch goes on. You can fix this by using the Vaio Recovery Wizard. Click on it, then Proceed With System Recovery, Custom Recovery, Application Recovery. Select HotKey Utility then Repair. It takes a reboot and works after that.

This is a skill you will get good at with a Vaio as it seems that every driver update or patch from Microsoft will break something.

Thank you a million times andyinsdca. It is now working properly and now I know how to recover applications from my Recovery cd without having to start completely from scratch with an entire system reboot. BTW, I tried andyinsdca's method by going to my WINNT/sonysys/VAIO Recovery and running the art.exe file, but I just got an error. Using the recovery cd worked great. The cd said also, start the computer with the recovery cd in the cd player if you want the whole system recovered.

Good luck to all![ :)][ :)]

Has anyone had the problem where the "APplication Recovery Wizard" prompts you to insert disk 1 continually?

I have attempted this about 15 times and no matter what disk I put in the CD-ROM it prompts me to insert disk 1. (Even with no disk in the drive, which should cause an error like it does when installing an OS)
I am just trying to install the HotKey Utility. so I can use the Fn key.

Hi,I haven't mentioned that, but there could be some problems with laptops F serie (VGN-M315 and newer)or any new ones of all series...I don't know where exactly is that problem ,but in these new laptops is not hotkey utility at all, hotkey utility could be a part of keyboard driver, but I guess only ....I'm so sorry ,I can't help you at this moment, but I work on it ,I'll let you know asap...

    Good luck

    Vagon,

The Fn key on my PCG-V505GP does work with all other keys except the "brightness", "volume", "mute" & "LCD" keys.

I followed your instruction, using the same files & sequence you listed but from my recovery CD. Still don't work.

Does it have anything to do with the setups at "services.msc" or "msconfig"?

    Appreciate your advice. Thanks.

HEY THANKS!!!! This worked on PCG-Z1AP !!!! I should note that restarts were required after all 3 steps, but it only took about 10 minutes and now the Fn keys work. This should suffice for dimming the LCD the same way that Power Panel does automatically? (since installing power panel seems to be a lost cause... wasted so much time on this **** laptop)

    vagon,

your fix did it for me, it fixed my Sony Vaio PCG-K13. Thanks

for anyone else trying this fix:
make sure you uninstall First (if they are installed) :
    1. Hotkey Utility
    2. Sony utilities DLL
you can find these in add or remove programs in control panel.

    hope this helps anyone else.
