I kept seeing references to portable software and checked it out last night. I was surprised at how much is actually available.

To one of my USB drives I added

    Firefox
    Open Office
    Filezilla
    Kompozer
    XnView
    Defraggler
    VLC

    and some documents and music.

    Here's a list of what's available.

If you have a U3 drive there is also a ton out there.

U3 sucks at everything it does. I don't need it starting up everytime I plug in my Sandisk Cruzer Micro. I don't need to have an organized menu with portable software. I can just put files of portable software directly on to the drive. So, I just deleted it.

    I found this on Wikipedia.
I guess U3 was a failure from the beginning. Software developers rarely bother with U3 anyway.

I have a 2GB flashdrive but i almost never use it so i guess i'll load it with a few apps. U3 was crap though.

Mine is only 512mb and I have quite a few things on there so far. I just added CCleaner, Avast, a duplicate file finder, and a video downloader.

It's also U3 which is OK I guess once you get used to it, but you can remove it it you want. The latest updates have an unistaller. Having U3 doesn't seem to affect the portable apps.

I'm getting portable apps. I'm gonna install Firefox and probably something to do word processing.

I've seen several people, here and elsewhere, down on U3. I've used a 4 gig U3 drive for about a year now and I have had zero problems with it. I run both U3 and regular portable apps on the drive. Among others I have Firefox, Opera, Thunderbird, Sunbird, Open Office, and some encryption and antiviral software.

It's just the U3 GUI, how hard it is to uninstall. I just didn't like it. Personal preference.

It looks like it's just a click in the settings menu. If you don't see it try updating first.

I've got a 1GB U3 Verbatim flash drive, the program is not too bad, it works I guess. The password function is nice as well. But since i'm a college student, I'm always rushing around places (such as the library computers) so I need a drive that I can just plug in and start opening files which is why I keep my old 512MB SanDisk cruzer mini handy.

Also, it appears the U3 version I have is not compatible with Windows Vista (works fine on my XP desktop). Is there a driver/patch I can download to fix this? I tried contacting Verbatims customer support more than a month ago, never received a response.

Can't you update U3? It will give the the option of uninstalling the software after.

I already uninstalled it, that's the thing. I installed portable apps suite and it works very nicely.

Yeah, I unistalled the U3 software and went with the Portable Apps Suite. I did delete some of those programs and added a few others.

    Here's what I have now:

    Firefox
    Open Office
    Filezilla
    Kompozer
    Audacity
    VLC
    Sunbird
    Gimp
    XnView
    CCleaner
    ClamWin

I also tried Avast but it doesn't appear to let you select a drive.

Softpedia also has an extensive library.
