Well box.net gives you a gig free. Not sure if they use FTP. Does it have to be FTP and why?

Well, it may be hard, since if they are free, they can only give so much space without people taking advantage, etc.

How about setting up your own ftp? Though, is there any info we can get on what you're gonna do with it?

If you do not have a good upload speed and want to share files to multiple people you should try one of the free filehosters. Basically that works like this:

You go on the hostsite, select the file you want to upload. The file then will be uploaded and when done you get a link that you can deploy to your buddies, if they click on that link they have to wait like 30 seconds to see advertisement, then they can download it with fullspeed.

Its good for private use. I use www.rapidshare.de sometimes. You should be able to find some hosters using google in your language :p

Well you could always create a web page with links on it. You could either host it yourself (if your gonna do it this way i would reccomend abyss web server because it is very simple) or you can create a google page ( http://pages.google.com ) with a google account. if you dont have a google account (you can use the same user and pass as a gmail account) PM me and i will give you an invite.

SmartFTP is what i suggest to my students. It's free - and has all the good features you need (CHMOD, scheduled transfer, ASCII/Binary, etc, etc)

Most (if not all) of sites posted either don't allow direct linking, or aren't FTP.
    http://filecities.com/ (the best one)
    http://www.fileden.com/
are a couple good browser-based ones (not FTP), both allow direct linking.
For a free FTP account, try http://www.phpnet.us/ (though they are meant to be a web-hosting site, and it's possible that your site gets deleted if you just use it for file-hosting without putting up an html page or anything.)
