My laptop earlier this morning just suddenly started fading to white, not sure if this would be a windows thing, a hardware thing, or something else entirely...

Anyone have any idea? A reboot fixed it, but it has me somewhat worried.

What exactly does, "my laptop faded to white" mean? Like physically? Or did you have a browser opened and it faded to white?

Programs that are not responsive usually have their window faded to white. I don't know if that's what you mean. Sorry.

I've heard of that, but I can't remember which manufacturer was affected. Are you using an HP by any chance? I think this was a known issue, and there is a hotfix for it. You may want to google "whitescreen fix" or something along those lines.

EDIT: I believe the fix is a BIOS update. I would either contact HP support or browse the website.

....oh, and if you have another manuf. I'm not sure.

The computer is an Acer, basically entire computer stopped responding and entire screen started fading to white (colours became more and more washed out until they were white)

It wasn't just one program, entire screen was fading (taskbar, everything) first time it's ever done it and I've not changed config for quite a while.

Are you overclocking? If so, stop it. And check your temperatures. I've had that happen only when things were running too hot, I think the DAC chip was flaking out.

I'd still say it's a hardware issue; similar to what pitabred said.

Check Acer's site for BIOS updates. Make sure you're on the latest. Check Windows Event Viewer for any errors or warnings around the time it last faded out.

Yea, thats happened to me. I call it the "go into the light screen of death". Its only happened when I overclock. So its a GPU heat issue.

Damnit, no overclocking and I have the latest BIOS (and the machine wasn't even hot when it happened).

Hmm I'll watch for it happening again I guess, and if it starts to happen frequently it'll have to be service time :(

Your GPU could still be overheating. Can you check your temps?
