Just got my motherboard replaced due to the laptop not being able to boot. It works now but the fan is just SO loud whenever I do intensive stuff (gaming, movies, etc). The thing is, my laptop isn't overheating at all. So should I get some kind of program to turn down my fan? Could you guys suggest one? Or maybe I should replace the fan?

There are no programs that can control fan RPMs besides SpeedFan (likely won't work) and IK8FanUI (definitely won't work unless you have an older Dell). Fan control is regulated by the BIOS, which has probably been flashed to the most recent version if your mainboard was replaced. Some models, such as select HP dv6000 and dv9000 laptops had such BIOS updates issued (this was due to overheating problems).

Hmm okay. I have the Inspiron 1420 (which doesn't have a history of overheating I don't think). But I just downloaded a program to monitor my temperature and whenever I play a game, the GPU temps jump from low 50s to well over 100+! So no wonder the fan has to work so hard...*sigh*. I guess I'll have to call Dell support tomorrow for a new GPU or something.

reinstall the fan. You'll need to open up the machine, pull the heatsink, clean all the heat sink goop off, reapply quality goop, and reassemble.

Also check the bios level of the laptop mobo. A newer version might be available that quiets the fan by being more selective as to when the fan is run at full speed.

If the fan is spinning usually its cause of the heat. Since you said your laptop is not overheating im sure you got some screenshots to post :p
