And here it is, my ALL TIME FAVORITE, HANDS DOWN, NO QUESTION ASKED:
NORTON COMMANDER!!!
And its modern Windows counterpart - TOTAL COMMANDER!!!
That's the file manager / disk browser utility I absolutely cannot live without. It's so much more convenient to me than everything else I've ever used (the File Manager in Win3.x, Windows Explorer in later versions or any other third party tools).
People who aren't used to Norton and its interface never understand what great impact it has. Everything is so fast, so easy with it - the second panel makes copying or comparing files and directories instant, keyboard shortcuts speed things up and the ability to to navigate using the arrows is so much more efficient than the mouse.
I was on NC since my earliest days. In the days of DOS, almost every time I wanted to do something, the first three keys I pressed on my keyboard when the OS loaded were N, C and Enter.
When I was running Win98 as my main OS I often found myself using the DOS version of Norton Commander even in Windows. But it already became somewhat difficult. The DOS version of Norton has no support for long file names, and it's a fullscreen program, making multitasking from it a bit more cumbersome than usual.
But all these problems were solved when I got introduced to Total Commander. This thing offers all the benefits of the original Norton with complete integration into the Windows system - long file names, NTFS drives, advanced network control (again via the Windows standard interface), the ability to issue standard Windows Explorer commands via right-click, customizable button bar and so many other cool stuff which I myself don't even use (like FTP support).
It's almost impossible to describe how good that thing is. On every new PC with Windows I always install Total Commander, put an icon on the desktop and assign the Ctrl+F12 key shortcut to it to launch it whenever I need at the speed of light. -
