I hear of these online services like "carbonite" that will backup files to a website. Well I have my own site with 120 GB of space. I have been thinking of storing pictures (unprocessed ones) as a safegaurd in-case of a catastrophic loss. So...
1 - Good or bad idea?
2 - Easy software tool to backup files?
-
1- I would also like to know, how safe they are? But I can suggest that you make an image of your whole hdd using an imaging software and put a password on the image file, that way it is safe.
2- you can use Acronis True Image, the best backup/imaging program ever. -
If you have ftp access, there are a number of programs you can use.
Try docshield
http://www.docshield.com/index.html
(free for personal use) -
Thanks for the replies.
I do have FTP access to my website and I do I have acronis true image too.
I take a look at docshield as well. -
gerryf19 - Docshield, nice. Thanks for the link and +1!
I am considering something similar. I tried carbonite, but I just felt funny about storing all my crap online, although it is a good disaster backup policy. If it's just pictures, most are just innocent family snapshots, so no big deal I guess.
Now I'll have to purchase ANOTHER 1TB HDD -
Online Backups are very useful, especially when you do not have a big hard drive at handy.
-
Ack! I downloaded and installed, but DocShield gives an error when starting. I have Vista Business 64-bit.
-
-
So you're saying try later? Wouldn't the executable be the same, or does it install files from internet? IT's only 700KB.
-
Sorry that I cannot help you more. -
do you have net framework 2.0 installed?
-
-
Yes. I have Vista Business 64bit with .NET Framework 3.5 installed. Isn't it backwards compatible with 2.0?
-
It should be...never tried to use it on 64-bit though, so perhaps that is the issue.
There are a few other programs you can use, though they are not quite as elegant.
Comodo will backup to ftp
http://backup.comodo.com/
GFI backup
http://www.gfi.com/backup-hm
Syncback
http://www.2brightsparks.com/
Filehamster
http://www.mogware.com/
All of these will back up to a ftp server and you can schedule it. The beauty of Docshield is it works in realtime...when a file is changed, it automatically syncs to the back. Now, that may result in more network traffic than you want, but it is very cool
Filehamster can be made to do this, I think, but you need to write a script using the plugin feature.
