Internet speed is almost the same on both laptops (Win 7 and XP) but when downloading the same file from the same server Windows 7 downloads it about 2 times faster than XP (tried two different XP systems). These are big files and I am wondering is there some setting that I can change on the XP systems to download faster?

Adjust your TCP settings using TCP Optimizer 3.0.7 to match your connection speed as shown in the below picture I made for you as an example, then choose OPTIMAL, then reboot when prompted.
Make sure you select the correct Network Adapated from the Drop Down list.

Measuring the 'download speeds' of an OS is ONLY valid if you are running the OS on the Same Exact Hardware.
Even then you're going to have significant variations in device driver levels and capabilities.
It's not just the IP stack and settings therein........ -
This is a much more complex thing because there are 2 devices with different configuration so that means different architecture so you have to make this test on the same device and not on two devices with different OS doing this means nothing

I have struggled with slow downloads on my xp systems for a couple of years and it could have been fixed with this program. The program made a backup of all the registry entries and as far as I can see I could go back to what I had in a flash.
Thank you again -
What exactly does that TCP optimizer do?

I suggest you go to the site and read their faq and see what you think. -
TCP Optimizer is one of the must install apps for me on ANY OS.
