I'm having a heck of a time transferring files in Vista. I have my portable hard drive attached via USB and want to copy 4GB of data. At first, Vista told me it was going to take 2 days to copy this.
My transfer speed has been all the way down to 1 MB/sec with nothing else running at all to slow it down. Right now it's at 1.82 MB/sec.
I've had this problem when trying to put files on a DVD. When I go through a DVD burner program instead of Explorer, I have no problems.
With all that said, do you think file manager software would help solve this problem? If so, what do you recommend?

absolut, Total Commander, just use it as "perpetual" trial, if u really appreciate the developer work, then contribute

Here's a dumb question for you...is that "absolutely" it will fix the problem with file manager software or is there an absolut file manager software. Been up too long with a fussy baby this A.M. Sorry to be in a fog!

well put it this way, using total commander on my vista comp does speed up the copying/moving files process

You could try disabling Remote Differential Compression: http://www.vistax64.com/vista-file-management/127675-file-transfer-speed-very-slow.html
I don't know if that'll help, but it might.
There's also a performance and reliability hotfix from Microsoft that you could install... I'm not sure if that'll help with this issue or not.
